Noob Asks What is IN a PPI
I had Eurowerks of NC do a PPI and Compression test and Leakdown test on a 02 996tt and drop in new spark plugs during the compression test since the engine is already open (they charged just for plug parts). Total price was $299. Really, I dont' know how it was so cheap, but I was not complaining. They did an execellent job and were very **** about every little detail.
Porsche wanted more than that JUST for the PPI with no compression or leakdown, and I compared the checklists, they were basically identical. I really got a great deal for PPI/Compression/Leakdown and took care of plugs so I can do the rest of the 30k service myself and save the $800 Eurowerks wanted or $1300 Porsche wanted for the 30k service (most of which is labor on plugs apparantly).

Also, the owner of the car I purchased bought the PLUS WARRANTY (see attached) for $4,000 about 8 months ago. I was given the option to transfer this warranty to me for $2k, which I accepted. It's a 3 year warranty and allowed for up to 40k new miles. It does have a $100 deductible, but is very comprehensive, pays up to $125 an hour for labor, and can be used at any Porsche Dealership or licensed Porsche Tech.
I figured I can always redeem the warranty later if I have no problems with the car and get ~$2k cash for it (maybe more, since I think the dealer was hoping I'd pass on it), but ~$925 a year for this warranty is cheap for peace of mind. Only problem is I can't get a new ECU without voiding it, but I can wait on that.

Actually, better yet, lets hope you never use it- get the $$ back, and blow it on a flash!

IMO, that warranty is far from comprehensive. You will note it excludes any real fluid leak or gasket leak. It excludes all airconditioning, and pretty much all the electrical modules.... You should read the policy, because the biggest deal will be the exclusions that apply. That and the hoops you need to go through to get a claim allowed. Make sure you dot the Is and cross the Ts.

Actually, it does cover AC, notice section 20 in the middle of the page.
I still need to evaluate the actual policy. I asked the dealer to send it, he forgot, and I haven't asked again. Regardless, I'm not going to tell him to redeem it for me, and if I decide to redeem it, the 50% prorated math on a warranty with 70% plus term left seems a little off, so maybe I"ll get a little more than $2k. I pick up the car and will post details about the warranty after May 17, will look forward to feedback. Thanks

Duh, indeed it does.
If you think of it as "major medical", then maybe not so bad.
The dealer will usually never get the policy. Once enrolled, they sent it to the original purchaser.... I assume you have done everything the policy requires for transfer, correct? (Someone else here got screwed when they forgot to notify them within X days and the policy became non-transferable.) Once it is transfered to you, you will receive a policy.
I always look at policies. NOBODY asks for them from dealers- they usually look at you like cattle when you ask for one.

Yep, that's exactly what happened. I asked for warranty, dealer sent me that brochure. I said, no, I need to see the actual warranty. Then he forgot to ask the owner. I'm caught up in finishing up my third year of law school finals right now and have not had time to press. I will certainly give the warranty company a call and make sure everything is properly transferred. I previously called them to make sure it was transferable in the first place, which they assured me it was.
In a way, yes, I'm thinking of it as major medical coverage. Its a "cheap" car, but problems are still billed out at the $140k base rate.
Thanks for your help, I really appreciate it.

What wording did you use for the contract?
You just added it to the bill of sale?
You just added it to the bill of sale?
You should be paying for and arranging the PPI, not the seller. I would never trust a sellers PPI unless I knew the person.
When I bought my 996tt I put a clause in the purchase contract stating that i would get a PPI at a shop of my choosing, and the contract could be voided for any reason based on the results of the PPI.
Every shop will have a different idea of what a PPI is, you need to clarify EXACTLY what is being inspected.
I had a list that I compiled off of this site, of common problems, that I faxed to the shop, and also had compression and leakdown testing done. I paid about $700 for a two day very through inspection.
