Is there anything I need to watch out for on early 996TT's such as '01-;02

Considering selling my E55 and trying out a TT996 and was wanting to stay under $40k just to give it a try. But is there anything I need to be careful of on the '01-'02's? Will def. do a PPI. Thanks--Andy

Hi-

Worry about first generation carbon-ceramic brakes if they on the car, RMS leaks, other engine issues.

I do not believe the 996 Turbo has any problems with the Rear-Main-Seal leak, the RMS issues are with the regular 996 cars.

There are no PCCBs on 01-02.
second gear pop-out, power steering reservoir (TSB), window regulators, ignition switch, clutch/slave/accumulator, hoses (check for leaks), fuel pumps/hoses, suspension components, plugs/coil packs.

What do you have to loose on a 996TT under 40K? Beats the hell out of an E55...

01-02 tt

Watch out for the hydraulics in the spoiler to get grit on them and go bad. Also, microswitches in the doors tend to go out.

in a lot of ways i'm sure it does, but not in acceleration...lol. have happened to have come across two different TT996's and was kind of disappointed at how easily the E55 walked away from them. Of course I wouldn't leave the 996 stock, but the benz currently is stock...

I have both modded and I honestly couldn't tell you which is faster. The E55 isn't a sports car thats for sure. It goes fast and straight. The tt does everything but gives me no real backseat and is much louder, and turns on a dime. I like both and therefore sometimes don't know which one I take out in the morning.

Both have had there maintenance issues that I had to address but then again both are like a rock and take a beating without question.

I bought my '01 with 49K miles for less than 40K - I got a family discount. The car comes with an aftermarket warranty until 2010. Below are what I have replaced since I got it in April and I only driven it for 2K miles. The car spends a lot of time at the shop since I want my indie mechanic to go over every parts before the warranty expires. I think the total bill is around 10K and half is out of pocket.

window regulators, clutch/slave/accumulator, suspension components, plugs/coil packs, radiators, horn, and battery vent cover.

I will need new tires, front rotors and pads. I will do the brake myself. I hope this helps!

Regrets = NONE! I have so much fun with this car and I have met great friends along the way....The best 50K I have ever spent and I am the type of person who thinks buying a car is a waste of $$$ until I bought the 996TT.

I bought mine with over 50K miles and have replaced the following:

-alternator a week after I bought it with a OEM porsche alternator

-I changed the clutch after I got a flash as precaution and by doing so it helped with my pedal feel to go back to normal.

-Battery died and I got a free one as I hustled the store under warranty.

Other than that, mines been perfect besides the mods I've ton done to it to enhance the driving experience.
