How long do brakes last and what is best replacement?

I recently bought a '01 996TT with about 35k miles on it. The brakes are a little soft for my taste...i live in Houston and have to be constantly braking suddenly due to potholes everywhere. What are the best replacement brakes systems that don't require much maintenance?

Thanks!

I would like to know this too. My car came with after-market one. I do not like the feel of it.

Where in H-town do you live? I never see potholes. Try visiting Chicago or NYC in the winter

I have a 2001, 68k miles with the original brakes.....although my mechanic says I'm almost due to get the fronts redone. I'll go with OEM stuff.

Depends on how hard the car was driven, doesn't?

My car has well over 50% of the pads, F and R, after ~30k

Are you serious? You must live in the 'burbs! I live near the galleria...tons of potholes EVERYWHERE. I actually live right off Kirby, one of the worst streets!

I have the stocks brakes and they were recently bled.

I was in Houston last week and stayed in the Galleria district. I had a rental CTS and was getting beat up with all the potholes around! Houston roads were terrible
