996tt s or 997tt
Porsche's in general only get better (evolution). What a 996tt has going for it is a simple suspension, known turbo systems, cheap price, and easy to mod for more power or whatever you want. Its got a spare tire and will probably be cheaper to maintain over the long haul. Some people don't like the active suspension of the 997tt which gets changed for 2010 to an improved system.
That said, a 997tt will out perform a 996tt in just about every catagory. The tip with overboost makes it even faster than a 6spd, so you can have it all. Nice ride, and performance.
On the 997tt forum I've noticed most that have upgraded from the 996tt never regret it

If you do not plan on going any further than tune and exhaust go for the 997tt as it has better turbos. However, if you plan to upgrade to larger turbos for much more power, the difference between the two cars becomes insignificant and the 996tt is the better deal these days.
Newer is almost always better. If the 996 had an iconic profile like the 964 or for those who like it, the 993 it would be a little different. But the 964 and the 997 are better looking cars IMO then the 996. I likettys 996 better then the 993 though, I know I'm in the minority on that.
If the 997tts were selling in the $40s, I woulda bought one- but they aren't, so the 996 made the decision easy!

as for looks, I think the 993 Turbo S is the best looking 911 of all time. But I think the 996tt with the GT2 nose is the best looking modern car with the 997 GT3 a close second. I am not a fan of the 997 tt nose. If I had a 997tt I would replace the nose with a 997GT3 nose.
I suppose it depends on what you plan on doing with the car. Heavy modding, I would use the 996tt platform - can pick one up and mod it for about the same price as a stock 997tt. If you just plan on keeping it mostly stock, then the 997tt.
Tracking the car, hands down the 997tt. With the new AWD diff that would be a huge benefit!
One thing to check out is the rumor about the cam bearing spinning and blocking the variocam hydraulics on the 997tt. Sometimes, newer doesn't mean better... All models will have their issues...

this is a silly thread. taking money out of the equation, who wouldn't have a 997 over a 996? this does however lead to a personal question of mine in which i will start a new thread, as i value most of the feedback in this forum.
oh, let me see. Would I take a non turbo 10k all water cooled motor over a GT1 based 25-30k motor. hmmm, let me think
