Thoughts in getting a M6 instead of a 996TT?
The M6 is a great car. It's very fast (a bit faster than a stock TT), sounds gorgeous and it would be a better (more comfortable) DD.
But, IMO, if you plan to do some trackdays, the TT is the right choice.
Then, as Heavychevy said, the TT has a lot more potential than the M6.

I don't have, nor have I ever driven either, but I've ridden in both and I would personally go with the 996TT. I like to have options and the 996TT has more, you can simply do more with the car, as I don't see an M6 taking repeated track sessions very well, and lacking in the fun/performance factor while doing so. As others have said the M6 was developed with the SMG tranny in mind, with the 6 speed as an afterthought, so the gearing is not correct. Also, the M6's computers/suspension controls have been known to have issues especially on some of the early production years. M6 with an AA exhaust is almost worth it though.
yep...
I have SMG as well on my M3 and love it compared to the tip.

... you are just afraid if you put your hand on a shaft you may not want to take it off... see ya soon!
If you want to save yourself lots of modding money go with the M6. It is nearly impossible not to mod a 996tt. They are just to easy to do and get big power. However, if you like to giggle every time you drive your car, get the 996tt.
SMG is great in the m6, to those whom have said otherwise, do you even own one? If you get the m6 you NEED the SMG, the car was built for it. Space wise the m6 is more spacey than the turbo and the trunk in the m is enormous. you need to drive them both and see which better suites your needs.

I've had both!
Well, I can finally add some of my insight into these cars. I just sold my 07 M6 with only 6K miles on it for a '10 750Li and picked up the 01 996tt for my "fun" car. I despised the SMG. Is that blunt enough? I just couldn't get used to the head bobbing while it shifted during normal driving. Sure, when pushed, the SMG did pretty well, but for normal day to day stuff, I just got to the point where I couldn't tolerate it any more. Also, the RWD didn't allow you to put everything down to the ground without alot of wheel spin.
The straw that broke the camel's back was when my wife and I went to M school in SC and were able to drive M3's, 5's and 6's all day long in racing situations. I was finally able to hop into the new M3 with the dual clutch tranny (DCT) and fell in love with it. We also owned a Lexus IS F with 8 sp auto that I like too. The 3's DCT was flawless and I was never the same with my 6 after that!
We came from a family of Porsche's, so I migrated back to them when our local BMW dealer hinted that they might be looking at joining the P club in the future and had a bunch of used P cars. That was enough for me and I've never looked back.
NOW, if BMW's new 6 slated for '12 or '13 release has a Hard-topped convertible, AWD and DCT setup, I'll be the first one in line to look at it, but for now, I'll keep the 996. Hope this helps.

PS, Also, the bimmer is more of a "grand tourer"- very refined whereas the 996 is a "sports car" and much more uncivilized.

One's a sport sedan, one's a sports car. Looks like there's a sport sedan in the stable
already (M3). It's a no brainer to me! Let alone 996TT's are at the top of the food chain.

I wouldn't bet on that. I love my Porsche and love my BMW, but I've seen that there is a big difference in the residual value stickiness between the two marques. A 911 Turbo will never be a $10K car. An M6 will. There are plenty of late '90s E36 M3s for sale for lfar ess than that. I don't think you can find any normally aspirated 911s of any year for that price, let alone a Turbo. I know that's not a perfect comparison, but my point is that a BMW can, and will, depreciate more than 90% of its value in far less time than a Porsche. Also, maintenance on that V10 as it racks up miles will probably far surpass the cost of maintaining a 911. (Including the Turbo) Having said all that, when I get bored of my existing BMW, I'll replace it with an E92 M3 as a daily driver, and still keep my Turbo as my "fun" car. Both manufacturers make superb cars, but they each have unique qualities.

good point. Remember the 850 2 door sports coupe. Kinda the M6 of it's time with a 12 cylinder engine. It was a beauty, but you can find them these days for in the teens and it was a 100k car new.
