No.

The difference between 4WD and AWD is the type and number of differentials. AWD has 3 differentials which distribute torque to the left, to the right, and between the front and back. This allows different wheels to turn at different speeds, and get different amounts of power.

4WD usually has 2 differentials. They are usually of a type that isn't so great for cornering.

Some AWD systems may be capable of serious off-roading, but it's mostly found in cars without the ground clearance for it. 4WD is simpler and more straightforward, and doesn't require electronic gadgetry to take whatever mother nature can throw at it.

"4wd" usually means it can be "turned off", by either a switch or manual locking hubs and AWD means you have no choice but to be all wheel drive, all the time, (unless you remove everything).

awd. it allows your 4 tires to move seperately. 4wd your tires are working together with less diffs.

Think of the subaru commercial... "moves power from the wheels that slip to the wheels that grip" lol

Honestly, if you wanted to call if 4wd it wouldnt be blatantly wrong, just less than 100% accurate. To the casual consumer (90% of drivers) the two terms are synonymous.

oh and for the record- Porsche has listed the drive system in the 911/959 as 4WD on a variety of sales items. Case in point, there is a 959 paris/dakar poster in my study "Where the road and sanity end", "if our 4WD works on the 6000 miles from paris to dakar it will work anywhere". That system is the exact same setup as the 996TT, so again to anyone but the most discerning they are synonumous.

Personally, I call it AWD for the same reasons stated above.
