Cgt @ $100k ?
#18
Tell him you are buying this car for a friend. You send him an email and say that you have a certified check for $10k more than the selling price, but your friend has a problem with the IRS or his ex-wife so your friend cannot take title.
You send him a phony paper check that takes time to clear for the selling price, plus 10k. Then immediately tell the seller to wire transfer to you the 10k over payment, less a fee for the seller's time and trouble.
Scam the scammers.
P.S. I did send an email. I did call the number, 718-679-1404. A guy with an accent answered. I asked if he had a CGT for sale, and he said yes. I asked where the car was. He wanted to know my name so I hung up.
P.S.S. Here is the email response.
I grew up on Long Island, but was moved to California in 1969. The relatives are still in NJ/NY. Lost most of my accent. The guy I spoke to had a Brooklyn accent now that C4S Surgeon mentions it. Thought the accent was East Indian. May my born in Manhattan parents rest in peace.
Bid away.

Interesting thread. Please let us know what is happening. I think the bidding is over 300K now. I would never give anyone I did not know more than $200 to $300 via any of these auctions. This is my comfort level. Ebay really offers no real protection from scammers, it is really based on trust. Think about it, You bid and win on some item. You send them the money some way(paypal, certified funds or check), than they have the item and the money. Honesty is what makes this whole thing work. It would be easy to get screwed. Most don't, some do.
Buyer beware.
I had a guy say he would fly me in a car from Germany for some stupid low price. I knew he was a scammer, so I told him I would meet him at the NY/NJ airport of his choosing with the cash for the car. Guess what? He stopped emailing me.

I spoke with the guy today. The car is not in Atlanta, it's now in NY. He needs to sell the car asap and wants 390K for it. He said he would take $360K cash. When I asked to see the car, he had a lot of reasons why that would not work...
He said he has another one coming in as well...

I receivced this email. If they had any brains, that phone # was a pre-paid, no I.D. cell phone. If not, I doubt ebay or anyone prosecutes this.
