I don't see why people are scared of auction cars. I bet that 90% of the turbos out there with over 25k miles and 1 owner will show it being passed through an auction at some point if you run a CARFAX. I have seen many meticulous owners post their cars on websites such as here, only to eventually trade. Where do you think the car ends up then? At an auction.

I agree that the history generally gets lost, but all you need to do is get the VIN and look at a CARFAX. Look at the previous area where the car was located and call the nearest dealer with the VIN. I have been able to obtain recent history from every car out there this way during my search. Can I get the full history from day 1...no. However, if the car has 60k, I really don't care about an oil change 7 years ago at 15k.

I am not trying to knock the owners car by any means. I am just giving him an estimate if he really wants to sell the car in todays market. If he has the time and patience to market it for some time, then he will probably be able to get closer to your figure. If he wants to move it and be done, he needs to be below what the dealers are asking regardless of mods.

While I don't disagree, this is what is driving the value of these cars down. People just moving them out and any cost. When people see these (once $120k+ cars) selling for $30k-$40k, they will just wait for one at that price. Great for buyers, sucks for sellers. Especially sellers with real nice low mileage cars. Most of us paid $50k-60k or way more for our cars used, and haven't put many miles on them to speak of, and now, for no other reason, they are worth $20k less. Very deppressing...

Dropping into the sub $40k range is what originally caught my interest. I have owned a bunch of older Porsches from a lightweight RSR clone to my current 993. Now that I know I can buy a mid mileage example TT in the low-mid $30s has me looking hard. Almost pulled the trigger on a couple of cars, but I am still not sure it will be the right decision for me so I am still on the fence. If the right color at the right price pops up, I will probably be driving it home and I will sell the 993.
May even try to sell my '77 308 GTB because some of the later cars have plummetted as well while the early Ferraris have held value and some have risen.
