Anyone used dealer consignment to sell a car?

I am trying to sell my 2001 Turbo and I'm trying to decide on the most efficient way to do it.

Besides posting here on the board & Ebay, I was thinking of contacting a dealer for consignment.

I called Beverly Hills about it and they said that they split the profit 50/50. They call "profit" anything over some figure from blue book, but I'm not sure which figure.

Anyone care to share experiences, comments, pifalls?

i did it on my first C4S back in late 02. few things to watch out.

back then the car was hot & my dealer didn't have any new C4S in stock. my car was perfect in every way including the condition, color & option. car was gone in 6 days & i pocketed about 11k more than they were offering me on the trade-in. basically they wanted 10% of whatever the car was sold. but because of the relationship i got them down to 4%. keep in mind that the most important thing is do they want to sell your car for u or not. if they have few used turbos in stock they'll of course push their car first because the profit is more. however, i'd still suggest u to do it because more people are gonna see the car rather than sitting in the garage. plus dealer can finance or lease the car if they new buyer wishes to do so. just make sure u tell them if you find a buyer in this period of time they don't get the profit.

2 things to keep in mind. 1. Many people who plan to sell their car cancel their insurance. Don't do that. Keep it until the car's sold. Prevents the dealer from selling it to a buyer who later defaults on payment and decided to keep the car. 2. Be sure not to surrender to the dealer the pink slip/title. It is your only insurance against the dealer selling off your car without notifying you possibly splitting with the car. Good luck!

Thanks Arling & Wantone.

BH Porsche was not very reassuring about the price they could get for my car. They say that they just sold a 2001 TT for around $70K! I wonder if he was just telling me this to keep me from pushing about the consignment issue.

Any other great consignment dealers to check out in So Cal? How 'bout McKenna?

like i said, u could pretend u're a buyer of a 01 Turbo. good choices will be the ones that don't have them in stock. use the same method to find out how much your car is worth as well.

Ryan,

I know it's out of your way, but do give Stanford European in Palo Alto a call. Besides being a Lambo dealer, they're primarily a pre-owned luxury/sports car dealer. They sell quite a few used porsches reguarly.

4% is typical, with probably a $5k minimum. I think that's the deal we had when we consigned our 355 at Symbolic.
