Upgrade update: second impressions
I posted a couple of weeks ago regarding my recent upgrade to UMW Stage 2A turbochargers and 964 RS clutch, among various other mods. I was in the very low to none boost break-in period at that time.
I now have about 600 miles on the car, and have made some boost runs, using Durametric to log data. The car was making 1.2 bar on the stock ECU program. I only got in a couple of runs before I popped the PSM/ABS lights for P0103 MAF.
Kevin looked at the data and told me to change the MAF and wideband (front) O2 sensors. Wish I'd changed the O2 sensors BEFORE the engine was back in the car! After doing that, I went out for some more runs, but immediately popped the same codes. I was upset, called Kevin, and he spent some time patiently calming me down. There were several possible problems, but the easiest one to fix/test was to disconnect the battery for 20 minutes, then drive the car for about 30 minutes for the ECU to learn the new sensors and their responses. Fortunately, this seems to have been the solution. I made several boost runs since with no codes.
The car pulls really well. It peaks at 1.1 to 1.2 bar, and the Durametric data are now a lot cleaner than they were before changing the sensors. It still has the stock tune - Kevin's magic module will be coming soon. Is it faster than it was? Absolutely. How much? I really don't know. I don't trust my butt dyno. But I'll be going to Mid-Ohio in two weeks, and then we'll know for sure.
I have to say that I am very happy with my choice to go with UMW. Kevin has been really patient and spent a couple of hours on the phone with me this week, explaining to me how to interpret the Durametric data, and what to expect. The upgrade has turned out at every stage just as he said it would. The tech who did the install, Rick Karch, has also been great. He even loaned me the tool to change the O2 sensors!

Stage 2A is is a hybrid turbo. The hot side is a modified K16 turbine, and the compressor side is the new GT2 compressor wheel inside a K26 housing. Zero Clearance is not part of the kit, but can be done at extra cost. ZC is a coating that goes inside the compressor housing which nearly touches the compressor wheel and the wheel wears a path into the coating. The clearance between the wheel and the case is so minimal that efficiency goes up considerably.

cool, can't wait to hear your impressions at sea level. My 2A was pretty vicious at 6000ft. In fact my best 1/4 mile run on it with an equivalent altitude of 8580ft was 12.41 at 119.7 on 91 craptane. For comparison purposes a stock 996tt ran 109 mph at this altitude and a GT2 Evo900 ran a 137 mph pass on C16, which up here is blistering.

Drove the car today after loading in the new software. There was a small glitch in loading the program, but Kevin emailed me a new file and I could then reload it into the ECU. It's really a very convenient to do it.
The car pulls really hard through the whole range. The most remarkable thing about the feel of it is that it is so smooth, you don't really have the sense that it's a turbo. I logged some data, and Kevin is going to tweak the programs a little based on that. It seems like we're about at the limit of the fueling for my setup (stock injectors + 5 bar FPR), but this is about where I wanted to be in terms of max power. These turbos will make more, but then there is other stuff that is needed, like intercoolers, injectors, and the stuff that breaks.
I really don't like making these runs on the street. Looking forward to getting the car to the track. Mid-Ohio next week.
