Coilover Install Instructions-Pics
Coilover Install Instructions-Pics
Hey guys frst thanks to all that have given information over the months of various parts i have installed my self. Next up KWv3 coilovers.
Ok im not new to this i have done 4 corners on a 964 awd TL wide body.
I do it because its therapy or maybe i just like turning wrenches...
I need to know how to remove interior over rear seats. I always get stuck on the micky mouse connectors lol.
The backs take me about 1 hour per side. Well that was on the 964.
The fronts are where i need help. any shortcuts. Maybe using a spring compressor (in a prior life i was a tool maker so i made my own...lol) then pop the shock out or do i need to remove the lower control arm on this 996 turbo?
Any help would be greatly appreciated im 55 and still doing all my work in the garage...thx Ed

Ed it sounds like a labor of love indeed...until the daggawn nuts on the struts are stuck and whatnot haha
... just kidding...
I would like to learn about this also, may be a good time to replace items if they are worn like shock mounts or just have a good look in/under there while the suspension is out and apart. I thin the key is getting a really good alignment done immediatlyu afterwards...

Here is a good diy for getting to the rear tops:

Front tips - def a spring compressor to help get the stock struts out. Remove the tie rod end and either remove the outer axle nut so you can wiggle the carrier around. Or as I found on one side, the inner axle will come out of the front diff with just a tug. They are held in by spring clips - so just pop them back in when you finish up...

I just r&r'd my pss9's to inspect them, the backs are easy, fronts are a bit more complicated.
Jack the car up and remove rear wheels. Remove the swaybar link from the swaybar (take it off the shock and put it on the new one off the car is easiest) . Remove the lower mount bolt, then just put a screwdriver through to hold it temp.
Remove the top three nuts from inside the car. Remove the screwdriver and drop the strut down. Make sure the car is jacked high enough to remove.
Replace in reverse order, some times its easier to lower the spring perch lots to allow easier install then thread back up once in.
Fronts are trickier, Before jacking pop the center cap off the wheel and remove the axle nut. You will need to pop off the lower control arm ball joint as well as the tie rod end. Remove the brake caliper and disc, hang the caliper or prop it up on a block of wood or jack stand.
Remove the sway bar link, again from the bar and remove from strut when its off the car ( or just install a new one if you coil overs come with them)
Pop the ball joint and tie rod end. Do NOT use a fork, spend the money and buy a small ball joint separator.

Unplug the abs sensor and leave sensor in hub assemble. Unbolt the three top nuts under the hood and remove the hub and strut together.
Loosen the strut retainer bolt and slide the strut out. Install in reverse.
Might have missed something, just did that from memory.
Not hard at all, but finding the small ball joint separator can be.
