I went the stock 997 route and it is a huge improvement over the 996 unit. I thought I'd give it a try before shelling out 400+ for the 997 ssk. Picked up a used one for $60 and if I decide to go with the 997 ssk later I am sure I can sell it for what I paid for it. So I see it as a free trial.

Larry, I went from a completely stock 996tt to a 997 SSK shifter. It was one of the first mods I did even before my 18g upgrade. It was a night and day difference from the stock, long throw, rubbery feel of the shifter. Jeff is right, it's in the same ballpark as a S2000 shifter which I think has a great precise feel. When I bought my SSK from Suncoast I think it was in the low $400 range but that was a couple of years ago.

This is the same path I took and I'm generally quite happy with the decision. I think mine is still breaking in a bit (< 400 miles since install) and my only tangible gripe is that the car is a bit trickier to shift smoothly at low speeds. However, when driving medium to hard, the 997 SSK is a dream and really helps you to interact with your 996TT!

I went from the stock shifter to the regular 997 shifter and have been happy with it but wonder if the SSK would be better for the track. I've read that it is not as fast under those conditions.

I'm going to the track today and will see Mikelly who has the SSK, so I'll pick his brain about the on track capability.

Best upgrade we've done when you consider "bang for the buck".

porsche 3 is infamous around these parts
I went from standard shifter on my 997 to ssk and it was a big difference if I remember correctly it was 30% shorter throw.

I believe that is the standard shift kit for the 997. The short shift is more expensive and probably has a shorter throw.
