How hard is it to convert TIP to 6 Speed?
Has anyone done it?
What kind of cost is associated with it?
I would imagine a swap-out would free up a TIP that someone may want.
Thanks.

It's not hard at all. Put a for sale sign on your car and stick it on the side of the road. Then sign on to 6speedonline and buy a car out of the classifieds!
Seriously, would be a massive pain in the tail. Everything from the ECU to the center console trim, to the tranmission mounts would need to be changed.

I'm thinking that it wouldn't be at all.
ECU's can be flashed, they certainly do not have a different one for TIP and 6 Speed.
Center console trim would be the same, would be only the base plate and shift boot.
Transmission mounts can't be that much.
Someone has done it, this I am sure.

From my basic research, it wouldn't be very difficult. IIRC, The tip requires an adapter to mount to the motor. Once removed, the 6speed bolts right up. Add your pedals and shift linkage. I didn't want to bother with it tho.

So, let's talk how much?
Anyone have a 6 speed out there? I'm sick to death of people bashing my car because it is a TIP... all I hear is BLAH BLAH BLAH!!!! The TIP's are FAST cars, 6 speed drivers can say all they want, they are not as fast as a computer when shifting.
SO, I'm considering a change to a 6 speed.

In Manual Mode, my car flies through the gears and when I want to take it a little easier simple Drive Mode works great.
I've done AT to MT swaps on a supra and nsx. on both the ECU was different, wire harnesses, pedal set, speedo gauge set, prop/drive shafts to add to what others have said.
it is a pain to source the parts, and make sure the job's done right. On the supra, the transmission tunnel had to be modified for example. might be more than meets the eye. I did it only because finding a clean MT was near impossible. Selling AT and buying MT might make more sense.

I have a 996tt Tip. I must admit its not bad. I never, never run it in Drive. Its always in Manual. I do about 10,000 miles p/a. I had a Cayenne Turbo s with Revo before this ( 590 bhp fly) that had Tip but you could use the Gear selector to change gear in Manual ,Push up and down, like a sequntial box in my x rally car. Just felt more normal. I have been using Left Foot Braking (LFB) in traffic for years and still do in my 996tt. It also feels less Lazy. Gives your Left foot something to do. Also Using your Left Foot in a Queue is easy. Keep your Right Foot covering the Gas and the Left doing the braking.
Practice, a lot, first. I have been doing it rallying for years. It takes alot of practice and can be very dangerous if you are not used to it. You will hit the brake like its a Clutch .Basically an emergency stop. The more the car slows the harder your foot presses the brake because your left leg is not used to fine braking control.
I brake normally once driving at speed. LFB is also useful for power starts.
I do not legally condone it to anybody and am I not suggesting you should do it. If you do however ( lol) practice it, practice it alot. you will find your self doing it all the time once you feel safe. The brake peddle is extra large so why not use it if you feel safe. Its upto you. Have a play in a Car Park see if it puts the fun back into a Tip Box. And my advise is never use Drive mode, its lazy and makes you feel lazy especially if you want a Manual like me. If like me all you could get was a Tip then enjoy it as near to a manual as you can. Then never complain about it again, I love Manuals and Dog Boxs but I would not sell my 996tt just because its a Tip.
Think of your tip as a Semi-manual and not a Semi-auto. Getting your head around to the idea of a Tip is the trick alway be positive and alway treat it like a Manual.
Get used to the gear ratios and speeds , change up and down youself whenever the computer will allow. When you feel the power dropping at hight revs ,change gear. You wouldnt drive the rev counter to its limit in a manual car so why do it in a Tip. Its a far more rewarding drive.
Hope my input helps.
Remember a "911 996 is 911 996" There's nothing better.... Love what you have.

There is a lot of advice to sell on this post. I wonder if those who's advise to sell own a 996tt and just have too much cash. I bought my 996tt Tip from a Porsche (uk) garage and paid £56,00 May 2007. I have spent another £7,000 ( so far)on it with tuning bits, ecu upgrages, Turbos etc etc . It is worth at this moment £28,500 to £30,000. Dont know about the rest of you but thats a chunk of money to loose. . i'm sure there are many more like me that would loose loads if the sold. The UK second hand market has collapsed.
I got £28,000 for my CayenneTurbo in 2007 which I paid £52,000 for in 2005. Never again. I intend to keep this one.
Thats just my thoughts anyway. There is no right or wrong.
