Failed California smog test, need advice
If you have an A/F imbalance (maf issue, intake leak) it can result in running rich (but no codes) such that the cats cannot handle it.
Dunno about the softronic flash, but I typically see this with just niggling little issues...mafs fouled, intake leak, coolant control too cold (this with other cars, not my turbo)
My theory for turbos: If you have an intake leak, it can work like this: 100 'units' of air flows past the MAF. The DME calls for 7 units of fuel. 100:7 = 14.3
Lets say some of those 100 units escapes and doesn't enter the engine. Say 90. then 90:7= 12.8 so losing air can change the AFR.
Now, the O2 sensor of course sees this and trys to correct it- it will change the long term fuel trim to correct. but the problem is that this 'air loss' is variable. On boost it is different than off boost, etc... so you trims are constantly moving around. Dynamically the system usually is rich as this is a 'safer' failure mode.
At least that is my simplistic view.

No CEL is turned off on my car. I was told primary cats is all the car needed in order for the ECU to read correctly, hece I kept those. Kevin at UMW would not turn off CEL even if i requested, which I told him i did not want to turn 'off' cel.
I think he used commonsense that there is never P 911 turbo car or F or L bait car. Who would sign/authorize to buy high ticket cars to just keep in facility and all its function was tampering emission equipments as smog bait cars.
If your car was Lincoln of Ford with red AP hose, you know he will fail it.

Drug Seizure
Yup -- just looked it up. No worries -- we'll overtake Italy again soon enough....their Government is just having to much fun partying

Thanks for the advice!
The car was already in operating temperature (did a couple of freeway pulls) before I took it in. The smog tech also revved the engine to ~2700 rpm for about 3 minutes before inserting the probe into the tailpipe.
I did a bit more research, looks like I either have failed cats or the 100 cell (?) cats on the Tubi won't pass the strict Cali emission test. What's troubling is that at 2262 RPM, the car had a CO output of 2.26 when the maximum allowed is 1.00. If what I read is correct, high CO output equates to issues with the cat.
With that said, anyone local (SoCal) want to sell me/lend me their stock exhaust so I can pass smog and register the car?

Not sure if you know but 100 cell cats are not even street legal.. how do expect to pass emissions in California...
good luck

Problem solved. The culprit turned out to be the one thing that I suspected the least - the Softronic flash.
The result? Even without the cat properly warmed up, the CO% went from 2 something down to 0.8 (passing!). The mechanic warmed up the cat and put the probe back in. I couldn't believe my eyes, CO% dropped to 0.06!

Same issues here with the 650 Softronic flash...not sure why they richen up the idle mixtures so much.

....going to change to the 911tuning.com tune in a few weeks
thats some awsome advice there sir...
but where to live if one likes great weather and easy living?
AK?
Nah, I'll stick with my 10rd mags thxkbai!

back on topic, I've never had a prob with my 620HP 9ff passing smog.

am happy i have property in a county that only makes you smog your car when you sell it. hell half the cars up here in the woods
1. never see the real road
2. drive to the post office and grocery story maybe two miles a week
it's not a bad law as we never drive or cars anyway i mean the longest trip would to be to the smog station ......love ca hate the goverment

Softronic provides every customer with an original Porsche file and tuned one. Should a customer have to or want to revert back to the factory file then they can do so by re flashing the car with the cable provided. This does not require them to have any shop flash the car for them with a Porsche tester yet they can do it the same way they installed the tuned file.
The car will go into Ready status with the original file provided as long as the cat converters and other items have not been tampered with or are within the factory stock file specs. Times it will not would be : The deletion or installation of non efficient cats or faulty ones, deletion or faulty O2 sensors, deletion or faulty Tank vent , etc.
Having the ready status set or not in a file doesn't change the smog test results. Running straight pipes after the cats doesn't affect the factory setting or emissions as the cats are still operational and in place yet the mufflers have been eliminated.
Softronic can lean out the idle if requested or required by the owner or the Original file can simply be flashed back to the car in 4min and then reverted back to the tune etc as the customer desires.

New CA Smog Law
Hi Guys,
I was informed today that there is a new CA Smog law. The exhaust must not be temper with. Not even the catted aftermarket exhaust. It must pass the visual inspection. Is this true?
Thanks.

RE: New Cali law
CARB/BAR has ALWAYS mandated that every smog engine must be 100% stock. The only changes allowed by law would be with parts that have CARB Approved data tags with the specific exemption on it.
There is a lot of info available on the State of California, Bureau of Auto Repair site. I would add a link but every time I go back there it seems to have changed. I have found a lot of detailed information there. Warning - it can be depressing. Remember the move "1984"? That is the state air *****. I love the idea of clean air but they aren't playing fair.
In terms of visual inspection, it all depends on how thorough your smog tech is. The BAR is actively working to upgrade every one of them and has a big program in place right now doing that. So, count on it only getting more restrictive.
Hey, they also have a map on their site. It shows the different emission areas. Some areas of this state only have to smog when they sell a car. But, again, don't hold your breath as that will slowly go away also.
In a few years they will no longer use the rollers, etc. With all OBD2 cars they will do a visual and plug into your OBD2 port and see what your ECU says about how clean your car is.

Big brother land yah...
It's the whole world bro.
It's called technology. It's the google you use, the smartphone u dial with etc. THAT Facebook and google show you ads based on your browsing history that they track is far more "big brother".
It's funny how people want something, but then don't want to sacrifice a bit themselves. I for one, am all for people not being able to run catless, polluting vehicles. What if everyone did it??
Luckily, as a company with a global condcience, Porsche has ALWAYS. Been ahead of the emissions curve.
