Different wheels for DE?

OK, i just got the track bug, i did my second lapping session and just suscribed to two other that are 2 days apart.

Now my car is running extremely well, it doesn't give a sweat even with the abuse.

The thing i just realised is that the tires i thought were great for the street (toyo T1R) are not that great for such a heavy car on the track. (couldn't keep up with the smaller cars in the curve)

Now i did some research here to see if i could get better tires for my 19" wheels and it seems like there is not much of a choice for 19" wheels and that those tires are pretty much the best i can get for a reasonable price. I don't want to change for something that is just a "little" better.

So my question is, should i buy a seperate set of tires to put on my stock wheels who collect dust in the garage and just swap them out when i go to the track? I think i would get still some street tires but maybe with a better grip. Not sure if i should get R compound for such an inexperienced driver. What do you guys think?

Am i wasting my timing doing this? Should i just learn to live with the 19" T1R? Should i get some R compound for my 18" wheels or just some better street tires?

Any of you have a different set of wheels/tire for the 2-3 times you go to the track per year? Not talking about those who go every weekend and are experienced drivers.

thanks a lot

I do about 4-5 DE's yearly. Right now I have a similar dilemma.
I used to track my 964 and had an extra set of dedicated wheels, but they were hard to transport to the track and my skills were still too limited to really see the benefit.

I think you should continue to hone your skills with the street setup, and once you think you've extracted all the performance there, you go the extra mile with the track tires. If youre like me, street tires are probably more than adequate - I know my skills are far from where they should be for this car.

anothervr6kid is infamous around these parts
If you have some 18" wheels, get some tires for those and use them for your track days. Get some good tires, but not R tires until you can master the street tires.

+1

I think you will have more (cheaper) 18" options. Find some hollow spokes (*what I did) to use...super strong, actually pull/push air over the brakes, and are cheap. OEM'd by BBS too, btw.

+1 I would say 98% of the people on the 996 tt/gt2/gt3 section are not ready for coilovers. They say stock sucks, it's 'floaty' but i really doubt most people are extracting anything near it. Go hone your skills in stock suspension. Work on small upgrade parts here and there, and see how it affected the car and try to perfect it. I'm faster then a lot of gt3's on motons, and i'm on the 'floaty' suspension.

plus some of those "smaller cars" could have been driven by guys who've done 100 track days. YMMV, but skill trumps HP in the corners. Every Day Of The Week!
