The 9ff did it! Fastest Car!

Remember the article I posted about 9ff trying to produce the fastest production car. Well they did it!

you read right, apparently, as of the 12/12/04, the McLaren F1 is no longer the fastest production car in the world.

Once again, the new world speed record for production road cars has been set by Germany. Exactly 5 years, 8 months, and 12 days after the 386.7 km/h was set by the McLaren F1, the bar was raised a bit higher. 388km/h on the Nardo circuit where the F1 achieved 371kmh, the 2004 99f 9f-V400 reigns supreme.

With 840 bhp, and 880Nm of torque from the 911 engine, the car is capable of 400km/h.

like RUF, 9ff is a registered manufatuerer in germany.

their cars get their own VINs, says 9ff on the registration etc.

they start with a chassis from porsche and thats it.

somehow i just can't get excited over a car that looks like it's been put together in a backyard garage no matter how fast it is.

mclaren f1 is still king in my book.

How exactly does a frount mount work in a rear engine car - wouldn't there be crazy pressure drop from all that piping?

so then it really isnt a production car. Would you agree? The Mclaren is still #1 in my book, not taking anything away from the porsche, but porsche didn't manufacturer that car.

RUF and 9ff cars are not Porsches. They are certifed production vehicles that merely utilize the 996 chasis. This is quite different from Saleen Mustangs.
According to RUF:

Recognizing that one of the weaknesses of the Porsche Turbo was its four speed transmission, Ruf Automobile responded to customer demand in 1981 with their own five speed. It provided distinct performance advantages and driving pleasure for the owners of the turbocharged six cylinder engine. In the same year Ruf Automobile received the prestigious and coveted Manufactures' Certification from the German Federal Vehicle Offices.

I can't speak for 9ff, but I have always considered Rufs to be production cars (the ones Ruf builds from scratch, not the ones that start life as a Porsche and get converted). I would guess Ruf builds 40-50 cars a year.

The same holds true for Saleen. Steve builds cars from scratch that I would consider production cars (the S7), and, like Ruf, he also does conversions of cars built by Ford (the Saleen Mustang, which is a great car for the money, BTW).

Well, maybe it is all moot. If you read the EVO article on the same topic, they say it is not a speed record for production cars, but rather for street-legal cars (and since it is a Guiness record, I guess they get to decide which streets it is legal on). 9ff has chosen to change the wording to "fastest production car".

I dont know why anyone would be impressed by what 9ff did. They stripped down a Porsche body, duct taped every crack and seem, removed wipers, door handles, etc, etc. and beat the McLaren F1 by 2km/h almost 6 years later, with 260hp more????????

Even worse is that John Lingenfelter back in 1989 drove the Corvette Sledgehammer (890hp) to 255mph. So, 15 years ago they already went 20km/h faster than what 9ff did today at the same horsepower level.

On another note, comparing 9ff's car to the McLaren F1 is ridiculous. The McLaren F1 was built from the ground up and achieved it's top speed run with the original BMW 627hp engine. In other words, in the same form that the car left the factory, it went 240mph (except for raising the rev limiter). It's a street car that has 2 personalities.

9ff's car was built just to try to break the top speed record. You cant drive it on the road in the same form it was used to break the so called record.

So, someone please enlighten me as to what was so spectacular??

(Ok.. I'm off the soap box now. )

Not to take anything away from what the 9ff car did, but let's be real here, they beat the McLaren F1 by ONLY 1.3 km/h almost SIX years later?!?!?!

BIG DEAL!!!

OK, now lets take the McLaren F1 and the 9ff car to a track with TURNS and see who's faster. I'll bet the McLaren F1 will beat the 9ff car till it begs for Mercy.

What front mount intercooler are you talking about? That's a radiator in the pictures.

EDIT: How come a bunch of people jumped in here to start their post with "in my book it doesn't matter..." or something along those lines? Your book means nothing, the record has been broken by a car that met the same criteria and is in the same class as the Mclaren. End of Story.
