Griffon345 is infamous around these parts
BTW the smoke was blue and disappeared quickly. Perhaps no cooldown (oat was 45 deg C/111 deg F).

Is this a problem on the tt. I thought it only plagued the m96 motor?

The 996tt can smoke a little on start up. If the turbos are worn they can allow oil to settle on shut down and it quickly burns off on start up.
Give the car a good rev it should not keep smoking.
Other reasons for smoke on start up are valve stem oils seals/guides worn. Oil drains into the cylinders. But on a flat engine I dont think it can be as bad a say a Cosworth.

Could be. so long as the Turbos are not broken you can have them overhauled at a fraction of the cost of new.
Don'T take too much notice about what I said about valve guides, its not that likely. Just a point to remember.
