Spare Tire Information

I'm looking to replace the spare tire and the tool kit that had been removed from my 04 996tt before I purchased it. I now have the tire, jack and a few tools, but I'm not sure if I have everything.

Are there fasteners that secure the wheel to the floor of the luggage compartment? Is there supposed to be a foam insert in the wheel that holds the jack and the tools. If anyone has any information or (ideally) pictures of the stock setup I would appreciate it.

Yea, there is a bolt that secures the spare to the floor. But, why roll with that stuff? That's stuff weighs over 50lbs.

I agree. You are better off calling AAA and request a tilt body truck if it comes to a flat.

Agreed - and I rarely run with the spare in the car. I have a plug/repair kit that I keep in the car at all times. This is the way I go with motorcycles, too.

On long trips, I like to throw the spare in for additional insurance against flats. I'm also not so terribly concerned with an extra 50lbs in a car with over 500hp. At the track it would be a different story.

I've heard that tire repair goo causes the tire to be forever out of balance once it is put in the tire. Any truth to that?

The kit that I use doesn't really have any goo. There is a very small bit of adhesive for the plug, but that shouldn't cause any issues. Having plugs in tires could cause you to fail a safety inspection, depending on your state requirements.

For daily commuting, the plug kit is the way to go in my mind. It's light and I think that it's just as easy to plug a tire as it is to install the spare. Then you're not limited in your driving speed based on the spare rating. This is somewhat typical practice for motorcycles.

Here's the kit I carry if you're interested (no affiliation):

You can get it with or without a compressor.
