TIP Transmission Removal

Anyone removed their TIP transmission? I have a leak in the seal forward of the converter and need to get the trans off. The manual only speaks of removal of the entire engine. I wonder if the trans can be removed without taking the engine out? (I hope!!!)

Looks like the seal on the gearbox side of the TC. Inside the bell housing. The sump seal also leaks but that is the simple one.

I had a problem with a seal that porsche doesn't sell, they told me that i must buy the gearbox but it was an easy fix.

you must take down the drive shaft and the front part of the gearbox, not all the gearbox

I was speaking with 9ff yesterday on the same topic of Tip removal. He recons it can be done with the engine still in place. He says the engine requires propping up at the bell housing end but the box will come out along with the TC if you undo the TC bolts and it can be done on axle stands. Which is good news as I want to do a Tip upgrade before I start on more power and I dont have a ramp.

Thanks Alex,

That's just the diagram I was looking for. I'm gonna be tearing into that part of the trans. If I take that cover apart is all the trans fluid gonna come out?
I have excessive play at that front output shaft and probably a bad bearing.

Did you make a new paper gasket or just used silicone?

I don't remember if anything (fluid) fold down, maybe a little bit. you can not find the gasket, I use the silicone from the fabricator of the gaskets, a special silicone that can stand at high temperature.

ps. the pics are not from my car

Well I figured I'll check.

Be ready with some buckets. I'd say about 3 quarts/3L came out.

Below is the thread I just made with pics. This is definitely not a beginner DIY so unless you got some thick wrenching under your belt, have a ton of tools and resources and a VIP membership card to Harbor Freight, attempt at your own risk...BTW I just love how logical and easy this car is to work on.

Adam,

This post is an eye opener.
The Manual box does not have a transfer box, but it would seem that the Tip has got one looking at the pics you have posted.
Is that transfer box separate from the main auto box. Does it have its own oil. If not. how/what method did you use to refill the whole box again .
The w/s manual makes it sound a complicated and long winded affair!!
Thanks for any info,
Frank
