Oil msg comes up when its on 1-2 bars, so I add 1.5 - 2 quarts to get the bars full.

Sorry, should have been a little clearer before.

I add about 1qt every 1,000 miles (a month). I usually remember to add before the light come on.

I was using about 1 qt every 1000 miles with Mobil 1 0w-40. I recently switched to Mobil 15w-50 based on the recommendation by my tuner. I've noticed a decrease in oil consumption already, but I haven't yet been 1000 miles for a good comparison.

oil

Great info here, I just got off the phone with my mechanic and he basically said the same thing. 0-40 is so incredibly thin and will definitely burn off a lot faster that 15-50 or 20-50.

I have only owned my 996 TT for 9 months and put less than 3K on it and am wondering if anyone has thad this experience -

I got the warning message that oil was low, and I ran the test, which showed it was at the minimum, a single solid bar. I returned home, less than 10 MI (GENTLE driving ) , and running the test now the bottom bar is flashing , according to the manual, that it is below the minimum. I have not driven since and plan to add 15-50 at my mechanic's request.

Did I possibly do any damage in that short distance?

Also, can I add new 15-50 Mobil1 to the cold engine ?

Advice is much appreciated!

I'm using oil but in less quantity:

Bought w/ 9k miles at 12k miles bars were down to half after 1200miles stint from Houston down to Mexico, added 1/4 of a quart bars up to 3/4's.

Track Day pushed hard, chased cups

another 1/4 of a quart bars up from 1/2 to 3/4's.

Now pushing 14k miles not really sure where I stand but will check today.

BTW using Mobil 1 W05-50

@ Samidad - I doubt you did any damage. Once I changed the oil and didn't fill it up all the way. Test driving the car going up a hill, I lost engine pressure and it died. The ECU will turn off the car rather than damage it. Added more oil, got to a level ground, and was good to go!

The oil debate is a confusing one for me. I have always used, on 3 turbos, the Porsche specified Mobil 1 0-40. I too burn approx 1 quart every 1500 - 2500 miles depending on how hard I push the car. I have heard the many pros and cons for going to a heavier weight oil, start up in colder climes, more wear on the engine, etc... I would love to cut down on consumption but only if there is no negative effect. The cost of 10 quarts of oil every now and then is not worth playing with the health of the engine.
If someone has real data that says "this or that" is better I would really like to hear it.

Thanks for the feedback. Any comment on adding oil to a cold engine?
