Is the 996 t Block made from cast Iron like the 2jz gte? And are the stock internals forged?

964's rock and are race proven. We shall see how the new design made in Spain will hold up in the long run. Glad my GT3 was one of the last builds with the 964.....

rockitman,

Those in the know, know why Porsche went with the new design. The old design served it's purpose well for a long time. It's just time and the steady increase of torque, power and rpm's started to limit it's future. Remember, the race ready GT1 made a staggering 600 hp with this same case.

I know where you're coming from. The more I touch, open, mess with the more time it seems to spend under the knife for other little tweaks. I'm too much into driving her so I think I'm close to being done with her....

I was trying to find out more on the "Made in Spain" case in terms of the advantages...
Tell me about it. It is amazing to think Porsche left these motors at 600 hp .......... eight years ago with the GT1. There really isn't anyone to go to for all the information. You think you are changing one thing and you find out soon enough that three other things need to be changed. I sincerely hope when I'm all said and done that it will have been worth the wait. We'll know very soon.

Hehe... No kidding about the info. I only found out about the two different weights of pistons yesterday that Porsche uses... Little things but it's fun to find out. Then again I also found out my Methanol Injection wasn't working either since I had a lil' leak in one of the lines...

The only things I actually set out to do with this car when I started to play with it was run 10s on a street tires and stock block whilst making it a fun road course and street car at the same time. I wanted to prove that the tippy was no slouch and I think with many other people on this board that also have fast tips, that's been achieved.

Now with that out of the way I want to see what she'll do on high boost

Who is working on the tranny? What are they doing to it? Cost?

Who is working on the torque converter? What are they doing to it? Cost?

PM me if you would prefer.

sharkster,

We are taking a little different approach to the motor rebuild. It is being built to take 2.0 bar. However, making hp using high torque is the economical route to power .......... it is also the route to accelerated decrease in engine longevity. It is my opinion that anything over 1.1-1.2 bar is dramatically reducing longevity. Notice I said "my" opinion.

What we are attempting to accomplish is about 850-900 hp @ 1.2 bar.

I was not aware Porsche was using two different weight pistons on the 996tt. Was there a change after a certain date or is Porsche randomly using different sets of pistons? The second option just doesn't sound right. By the way, what is the two different weights? I know and posted what the stock ones versus the Wossner pistons weighted some time ago. I would be interested in the weights you have come up with. Thanks in advance.

Chad that sounds like a good idea... I mean running less boost to achieve more power is certainly optimal. Race cars are the same way and they last longer that way.

I wasn't aware of it either but I'll get the two different part numbers and weigh the difference. I don't know why there are two different ones available and "when" they changed.

Heya Craig,

I'll gather all the info for you on Monday/Tuesday so you can do the same thing. Obviously this isn't all that cheap or easy to do but I think it'll be very worth it.

The first step is the tq converter... which I will have back this week. Next will be the tranny but that won't happen until March.

BTW, do we know anything about our cams regarding lift and duration? Our Flat-6 motors are torque monsters considering it's displacement, but I think breathing at the upper registers of the RPM range needs to be addressed via cams and intake in order to optimize the motor.

Stephen,

According to Alex a block is "one" piece while a case is "two" pieces. Alex also cautioned me not to count the bolts when determining the number of pieces. In addition, he said if the rods break and result in a block with more than one pieces that you now have a case.

I'll ask Rob King for the numbers of the stock vario cam on Monday.
