Performance Difference between Flashed K16 and K24

My son just purchased an 01 which had been previously upgraded with K24 turbos, and GT2 intercoolers along with a GIAC Flash for 93 octane pump gas. Car has stock exhaust.

I have an 01 with stock K16 turbos, FVD Flash and RUF exhaust.

I drove his car and it was making 1.0-1.1bar pretty steady. My car holds 1.0 bar. His K24 was reported by AWE Tuning on a 4 wheel dyno to produce 493HP and 453TQ back in mid 2009 after it was upgraded.

What I did notice however, is a noticable lag in the K24 car acceleration. It seems to build boost much slower than my K16. It may be stronger at the top but I didn't get that much road to test. It just feels much more sluggish pulling from 2k-4krpm

Question is: Is this a symptom of the bigger K24's or could this be a difference in the tune? Or both.

I actually much preferred the feel to my lowly K16's.

Thanks for the insights.

K

K24's are more laggy and will pull harder up top, but the GIAC tune for the K24's seems to get bad reviews from what I've seen on here.

I really love the way my K16s hit...I sometimes liken the powerband to a naturally aspirated car (although I know that's obviously a stretch). If I ever want to upgrade turbos, you can be sure they will be either K16/16Gs or the newer K16 hybrids since I want to retain the low end punch. I would suspect most of what you're feeling is tune independent and just the comparison between the two different types of turbos.

K24 with a stock exhaust?

If you reduce the backpressure the lag will be GREATLY reduced.

Too bad there are 4 buyers for this: https://www.6speedonline.com/forums/...pe-2-loud.html

You beat me to it. Let him fit on a free flowing exhaust. Preferably an X pipe like Marks or Todd's. That would GREATLY reduce lag.

Do that, and watch that lag disintegrate into pull! Then you can accurately compare!
