CPO Question

Hello,

I am in the market for a 2001-2003 TT. I would preffer to buy from a dealer and get the Porsche warranty. I found a 2002 with under 25k miles for a fair price. However when I asked about the CPO warranty, they quoted me an additional 9 grand to add the warranty. Is that the typical deal? I take it you can buy your own non-Porche warranty, but is that a bad idea? Thanks for any input you may have on this subject.



All I have at the moment is an 08 4runner. But just got my "practice wife" paid off and looking to purchase a little something special for me

The CPO certification runs about $2k for the dealer to certify a car. If the in-service date is more than 8 years old, they can't certify it at all. It sounds like you need to find another dealer - they are trying to bend you over with an after-market warranty that is NOT the CPO.

And dealers wonder why they have such a bad rep........

Most 2002 and all 2001 are ineligible for CPO. CPO is limited to 8 years from production date.

If the car isn't already CPO'd, there would be dealer expense to bring the car into CPO spec. Maybe it's new tires or the upcoming service ...

CPO is insurance. There is a "insurance" premium to be paid, therefore added to the price of the car.

Put this all together and it could easily add up to $9k.

There is much debate about the cost/value of warranties of any type (CPO or aftermarket). Many advocate putting the cost of the warranty into a rainy day fund.

I bought a 2002 with 31K miles without a warranty. I ultimately purchased an aftermarket warranty just to sleep at night.

As an aside, the turbo isn't really a chick magnet. If you are hoping to maximize your newly found freedom ... you may want to explore something a little more flashy.

^^ Agreed that the hidden cost in a CPO can be the costs to bring the car up to the CPO standards. Tires must be over 50%, brakes must be over 50%.

or the dealer is just screwing you a bit.

However, you should really know what the car's condition is and what it needs....that $9 might be a big hint that the car needs significant maintenance.

Do not rely soley on the CPO. Get a PPI done too.

I just got an '02 with with a full CPO warranty. I was CPO'd in January so I have 16 months left. Go to the Porsche website and you can find tons of 996tt with a warranty...mostly going to be 03's and newer I would imagine at this point.
