we are also going to make active links to knowledge threads/diythreads/helpful hints threads on other forums acceptable....links to vendor threads that are more of an announcement than providing any knowledge will be removed

Great! I this could be a move in the right direction for this forum. I think everyone should help out by copying helpful links that are informative. I will do my part too.

On another board I moderate, I maintain ONE 'knowledge thread' - actually the first post in the thread contains all the links...

In it we create links to other posts or threads that organically arose to become 'touchstones' of information.

This ensures that the context of the original discussion, with all the information that might unfold over 20 posts, is retained while keeping an easy to reference knowledge thread which is short.

The person looking though the knowledge thread sees something like this:

DIY for spark plugs

What is the best oil- part 1
What is the best oil- part 2
What is the best oil- part 3

When they click on the link it takes them to the thread on [6speed] that had the original discussion.

This keeps the knowledge thread to, actually, ONE post! (not 300 pages!) and any questions or discussions get posted in the original thread that was linked (and not in the knowledge thread).

The drawback is a moderator needs to pay attention and recognize when a valuable thread comes up and should be added...I ask for people to nominate new topics as they arise...

A workable way would be to allow people to post a new link as a new post, kind of a 'nomination post'- and periodically a mod could move them up, and delete the 'nomination post' to keep in trimmed.

A

Well, I think the thread should not contain all the DIYs as much as links to the DIY threads. Here is kinda an example of what gave me the idea: http://www.ferrarichat.com/forum/showthread.php?t=50339

The only change I would make would be for their to be a standard format to the individual posts on the threads so it doesn't look as scattered and difficult to sort through as the above linked example. My example would look like:

Bosch replacement alternator available at Autozone

Bosch replacement unit, part # WO133-1646737 for $309

or
Linked thread on Bosch replacement alternator available at Autozone
https://www.6speedonline.com/forums/...lternator.html

Simplest way is to not clutter the Knowledge thread with too much info. If it is alot of info on a thread, link the thread instead of copy loads of info onto the knowledge thread. Simple things like replacement part numbers and sources could get posted directly as the top example shows though. Does this seem helpful, or does somebody have a better way? I think their may be several ways to make it work.

sounds good...the posts should be short and to the point...don't post an entire diy there...post the diy in the appropriate forum and post just the link to the diy in the knowledge thread

What about a format like this:

I've tried to keep this up to day for the 997 owners.

This format is pretty much what I was thinking, but without "thank you" type posts. The more gratuitous posts made will easily turn it into a 9 page thread to sift through. I think general knowledge in addition to DIY links in that format is a good way to go. Kinda a one stop for answering questions.

I agree...if you want to thank someone give them some positive rep with a thank you and leave your user name so they know who gave it...no need to post in the thread...

Chad...it will be a new sub-forum like the vendor classifieds in the 996 Turbo GT2 section...
