Tiptronic autocross and general feel
Tiptronic autocross and general feel
Okay,
I searched, I read, I still have questions. I plan to buy an 01 - 03 996 turbo in the near future and am trying to decide on whether to buy a tip or not. The car will be a daily driver in DC traffic, so, there is some attractiveness to having a tip. But, I also autocross as my (essentially) only hobby, and I do not want to ruin that experience.
Also, I recently had a rental car for a month or so, Ford Taurus, with 220hp and a slushbox auto with paddle shifters on the wheel. I HATED the Taurus. While it had power, you couldn't really use it. If you were driving along and wanted to pour on power, the car would go out of gear and think for a while about what gear it should be in, then it would select it, then it would move. By that time, the opportunity had gone and I was left cussing and hating the rental. I tried using the paddle shifts and it would shift in auto-manual mode, but, it would also revert to auto mode without me telling it to (so what is the point?).
Can you describe your experiences using the 996 turbo tip in autocross or driver's ed events for me?

If you track on a road course, go with a stick. It's not necessary faster (maybe marginal), but you'll have more fun rolling the gears. For autocross, it's doesn't really matter since you're usually in 1st and 2nd gear most of the time. The tip in the Turbo will keep the gears low and revs high in auto or you can just set the tranny in manual shifting.
I cooked my tip the very first time on a road course. Horrible road course tranny. AutoX, again I think you would be very disappointed. Now as a highway monster on the other hand, if you add power, it will eat many other stronger cars.
Weren't you on high boost? Do you think with the EBC off (running at wastegate pressure) the tranny would hold up? I got a gift certificate for Grand Sport Speedway lol
Nope. I was on low boost, but the EBC was on.. I wouldn't run more than WG pressure next time..
