Liberation, just went 2WD (again)

I can only say the same thing, ooooohhhh maaaan!

Spent exactly 3 hours with a friend (from rolling into garage until exit) getting rid of the 4WD system on my car (front diff and shafts), it now feels smoother, much quicker steering, quicker response on throttle. I love the turbo for what it is, a daily car with mega performance potential, but they really should have made a 2WD option, without the "compromise/extreme-ness" and pricetag of GT2.

If you are a driver driver, and have thought about doing this mod... The only downside is wet track driving/traction and snow performance.

Removing the cardan shaft is not going to make it fun if you want to test, you still have the "pig" in the front plus the axles dragging. The point is getting the weight out, and the front wheels running free, doing nothing but steering and braking. Those thin halfshafts weigh quite a lot.

This is, by far, the best mod per $$ and hour. Had we had a little better knowledge in this shop where every tool was, and not having to mess around with getting woodblocks under the tires to get the car on the lift (car too low - or lift too high) plus not talking about all kinds of stuff, I think we could have done this in 2h.

LSD will go in to make it optimal, but for regular having fun kind of driving, it's not a requirement.

Happy modding.

I have considered doing this mod, but am a bit afraid of the car being a bear to drive. My car is also 100% stock so I am thinking the suspension may not be up to par for this setup.

The car IS a bear to drive with 4WD, never consistent, always a step behind the mind of the driver... PSM will still take care of you. It will just be more fun.

I did it on my 03 turbo and the PSM worked well at the track. Now that the front diff is gone you can put a 235/40 in the front like a GT2.

sweet please tell us more.

I have often thought about doing this can you tell us what you did to accomplish this. It sounds like you did it the right way please explain. Any draw backs other than wet driving. I am sure the rest of us would like to know as much as we can about the switch, any replacement parts needed, and lines neded to be capped any mods needed? Thanks and look forward to the info.

rhargy is infamous around these parts
Enjoy.......Have considered it for mine, as it looks to be spending most of it's time on the track these days. If you do track it would love to hear what you feel are the differences.

YZWILLY do a search on diff removal and 2WD conversion, you'll find a ton. It's incredibly un-complicated.

rhargy this is the 2nd car I'm doing this to, the first was the car in the avatar and if you're doing track then =======>>>>>>> 2WD or you will hate the behavior of the car (oversteer/understeer/oversteer/understeer, unclean lines).

landjet: Yep that is the plan.

i am sorry but pretty sure you haven't tried the car in 2wd on a track, it is so BAD. Aawd is twice better on a track and pretty sure a LSD wil be 10x better than awd, absolutly no traction whatsoever in 2wd on a track without a LSD. Yeah it might work in the street but forget about the rest. If you have a lot oh HP, even worst, you get a one wheel spin even in 3rd gear.

The open diff in this car kills the experience. We have it on a 700hp car and on the track, it is undriveable, you need to drive it like if you were drag racing between curves to go at least little fast.

Thanks for chiming in. Here's my background: I've been to track many times, I actually have lost count (in total for 15 years, 9 of those on professional racing - ie 5 x 24H races etc), so comparing 4WD and 2WD in 996TT, with 2WD I had higher corner exit speed, and higher speed at end of straights, and higher coner entry speeds and mid corner speed, thus a lot better laptimes and the car is also on a consistent line, something that doesn't happen with 4WD in the car. Maybe I'm snowed in on the dynamics of Cup-cars and RSR so I want my "personal" toy to have a similar 2WD behavior (yeah I know the Turbo is a different story vs NA).

For just having fun around town (to repeat my previous post) and testing the 2WD mod, LSD is not a requirement (but I would recommend it if you will keep the car 2WD). The point being, for trying 2WD out to see if you like the better "everthing" in terms of feel, handling, agility and response don't worry about the LSD in the first step. It's easy to add later if you like 2WD. If you don't like 2WD, you can go back and still not having spent a penny on a LSD you might not use.

If you're going to the racetrack, yes you will need the LSD to avoid inside wheel spin.

Driving with 700hp and open diff is kind of "utopia", somebody forgot to finish the job...
