Why can't you use the same magnetic drain plug from a 930? Is it the same size? Just a thought

Hi Mark,

Thanks for your email, but as you figured, our magnetic drain plug does not fit your Turbo. Be assured, your turbo’s engine is bulletproof and you should be fine. We need them on the M96/M97 engines to help diagnose engine problems early on before they aren’t fixable. Thanks again!"

and is good for??
turbos only have the IMS noise. not really failure..
if it fails, then its too late to "locate problems before failure".
and i dont think that all "heavyer" magnetic parts can reach
the oil tank (sump) where the drain plug is located.
my be im wrong, just thinking about it....

there are two main drain plugs. ones is in the tank and one is in the crankcase, which if replaced with a magnetic one should be able to pick up the metal shavings if they exsist.

ok,
then it depends on how often you change the oil to see the shavings, and they have to be magnetic... there are many non magnetic parts in those engines....

Just noticed the replies here and did some more digging. the crank case drain plug in our TT's is a M20X1.5 with a 15mm socket head, and the one on the 944/930 is also a M20X1.5 with a 15mm socket head and it IS magnetic. The only difference i noticed was that our plug is meant to be torqued to 52ftlb, but the 944 plug is only meant to be torqued at 37ftlb. Other than that they should be identical, I'll order one and see how it fits and let you guys know.

Note i have the magnetic turbo plugs in hand, they look great and arrived quickly.

Hey, I hope this works. They are very similar cases so I don't think you would have any problems. Also, the plugs hold well. I would torque to the lowest setting and go with that... no reason for it to come loose.

Keep up posted.

Regards,
Bryan

Hey guys, I just installed the two magnetic trubo plugs and the crank case plug in the car last night. the 944 plug fit perfectly, and was only $10 from pelican parts, some cheap insurance, i'd definately recommend trying it out. I'll be curious to see how much metal they collect next oil change! My car has a really loud IMS rattle, so this will help me guage how bad it really is.

I thought about making my own by drilling the stock plugs and bonding a rare earth magnet in the hole. Just need to make certain hot oil will not soften the type of bonding agent I use.

The turbo sump plugs I have were from maxspeed, I couldn't find them anywhere else, the link is in the 2nd post on this thread. I wasn't able to find one for the oil tank, but for the crank case the 944 oil drain plug works perfectly, part # 944-107-197-01-M260. I think the oil tank is less important, but if anyone does manage to find one post information here

I know this is an old thread, but I was going to do an oilchange and replace my drain plug with a magnetic one. How many oil drain plugs are in this car? Some say one for each turbo and one in the oil pan. Does it make sense to replace all 3 with magnetic plugs? is the diameter, length, and thread pitch the same for all 3 bolts? If so, what are the specs on the plug needed for an 01 996 tt? THanks.
