Gotta ask -- does taping up the gaps really work? With the quality of some of the tape jobs in the picture (ahem), I would think the increased drag of the tape could be just as bad. Just curious if anyone's done a study on this. Or maybe it's just to keep the parts from falling off at that speed?

Yes, the runaway if far from the taxiway where spectators and partecipants/motorhomes/parked cars are allowed. At least 320 feet away.

One can get really really close to the starting point though.
