how do you guys drive when just taking the turbo out for an errand?
Random question kind of, but since I bought my car and don't have a warranty on it and I'm super OCD about my cars in general I wanted to ask you guys. I keep reading that most people don't get on the boost until the engine is warmed up and the oil pressure drops to around 2 as well as letting the car idle for a minute or two when they get to the destination. After taking a cruise yesterday I noticed mine doesn't warm up for a good while, probably for a good 5 miles or so. And since I'm always just taking it for every small thing lately I figured I would ask because I'm worried I may be putting excess stress on the engine. Here's why my OCD kicks in :
1) the ims noise on my car is pretty loud even with 5w40. That loud ticking noise just scares the crap outta me lol. And coming from a BMW 335 where a ticking noise is usually a faulty valve lifter it scares me in general. So I'm worried I may be putting undue stress on the car by driving it around and not letting it warm up fully even without being on the throttle.
2) I'm fine without pushing the car while just running an errand but should I drive it around to warm up the engine and then goto the store and let it idle before turning it off or can I just start, goto my destination and go do my business?
Yes, I am **** with my cars. Almost James May ****. *almost* lol.

Yea my concern was a short trip would not give the engine enough time to warm up, whether or not I'm in boost or not. I've noticed that there are times when even with mild acceleration, I hit 0.1 or 0.2 bar. I may just have to take the FJ out on short trips and leave the 996 for longer trips. Sucks lol.
strictly no boosting until its warmed up
after some fun driving i also let the car idle to let the oil cool down.
that being said, in the morning on my way to work i just fire the car up and roll. i hate sitting in the cold waiting for the motor to warm up. but obviously no boosting until she is good to go!

HI,I always let all of my vehicles warm up first before I jump on them..I do the same with my Turbo, wait until the oil pressure is down to 2...If at 2,that tells me that the engine is warmed up enough,to warm up the oil,to do its job.....Usually the water temp confirms this also.....But I have been told my a few master Porsche techs,,that these engines have been put threw all extremes when there were being designed and toke a beaten in all ranges AND had no problems with full boost with STOCK levels when cold.......So,you decide,,,,,I am old school and I want to know the engine is some what warmed up before I get into it.....Hope this helps...
Hey guys,
I am with you on the no boosting until engine warmed up. What I'm asking is what would you guys do if taking the car out on a short hop. For instance, the grocery store, or run an errand. My local grocery store is less than 2 miles away from me so would you guys crank and go and once at the store just park and turn the engine off before it gets a chance to warm up? Or would you drive around until the engine warmed up, get to the store, park, idle for a minute, then turn off the engine?

I'm OCD as well when it comes to this car as are many of us I assume. Short trips that don't allow the car to fully warm up in general are not the best for any car including this one but I'm sure it is not going to ruin it unless that is all you did with it and I can't imagine that. My regiment for driving the car involves starting the car up and letting it idle for a few minutes in the garage. Once the idle dips from 1000 rpm down to around 700rpm, I take it out (probably not necessary, but I do it anyway). Absolutely no boost or engine revs above 3k until the car reaches operating temperature. It usually takes about 10 minutes for this to happen from the time I start the car. If I am driving the car hard, I will always allow it to idle for a few minutes before shutting down to allow the turbos to cool. If I don't drive hard and am not really in the boost much (rarely) then I don't worry about letting the car idle as much befroe shutting down.

Just let it warm up for minute or two before getting your bread and milk.
Since I don't always drive my car, when it does get to operating temp or close to it the pedal goes to the metal as soon as I get a clear opening. If I have race gas in the car the pedal doesn't get let up! LOL! Well when I get to my destination it does. LOL!
Boost maybe but revs? Oil is circluating sufficiently especially after your long warm-up. Over 3K wont hurt then.
