Ticking noise from steering wheel

I keep hearing a ticking noise from the steering wheel. It happens when I move the steering wheel (whether car is on or off). It does not happen when the car itself moves the steering wheel, just when i manually do it.

Any ideas what it could be?

TIA!

was anything replaced behind the steering wheel recently like the multi function switch?

this noise might have been going on for a while...I really can't remember (car was at shop for like 6 weeks).

Nothing in the interior was replaced, I did have some front suspension work done recently.

Could it just be some spring in the steering column?

There are other threads on this imprecise sound. I have it and many other have also. To me it sounds like something binding, and it happens more in cold weather than warm. I don't think anyone has ever been able to figure it out, and I've chalked it up to one of those oddities of the 996TT.

i thought it might be something binding, but it only makes the noise when i manually move the wheel...not the wheel is turned and i drive forward or back and the car moves the steering wheel itself...

could it be something with the power steering pump?
