GIAC Flashloading and Hand-held Switching overview
GIAC Flashloading and Hand-held Switching overview
All,
I thought I would take a minute and offer an overview of information about these two very different programming features. I think a lot of the confusion is related to the fact that the terminology is so close. So, with that, here goes..
Flashloading is the latest GIAC method of loading the programming into the ECU. GIAC dealers simply plug into the car via the OBDII port under the dash and load the program(s) into the ECU; no ECU removal needed. Simple, clean and fast. Typically takes less than an hour from start to finish. Any/all program(s) are retained within the ECU; one is selected to be in use at the time of installation. The dealer can change the in-use progam easily, or:
The Hand-Held switcher is a simple device that GIAC has developed that allows the owner to switch among various programs such as stock, valet, 93/103 fuel etc. at their convenience. This device also accesses the ECU via the OBDII port; making a programming switch takes about 30 seconds from start to finish. This is an ideal device for those who are concerned about warranty issues as you can set the car to stock prior to dealer visits. The device is comprised of a small keypad attached to a cable that connects to the OBDII port as mentioned; it is easily stored in your glovebox or door storage compartments.
A few general points:
If you are not near a dealer, the ECU can still be sent to a GIAC dealer for programming. If multiple programs are loaded and if a switcher is also purchased, the owner would then be able to switch between programs at their convenience just as described above.
The switcher does not hold/store/load software; it simply allows access to the programs stored in the ECU so you can select which is in-use. So, the commonly read term, Hand-held Flashloader, is not really a correct term..
Lastly, Flashloading is available for 996tt's; it is still under development for some other cars though. For the latest information please contact your GIAC dealer.
Hope this is useful,
Team ImagineAuto

Gunther,
The switcher will support up to 5 progams and costs $150.00. Additional programs are $200.00 each. Please let me know if you have any further questions.
Thanks,
Scott
