Is A Porsche for Me?

Like I said in a few of my posts, I am thinking about buying a 2002 996TT. I currently drive a Mercedes E63 P30. In the past I have owned several Corvettes, a ZO6, M3, Supra Turbo, and Cobra. So, I'm familiar with quick cars. But what most of these cars lacked was any real hold on my heart or long term interest for me. I've been eyeballing 911s for many years but they have been well outside of my price range. I simply could not afford an $80K car.

I drive cars about 10K (at most) per year, keep them garaged, polished, and taken care of. They are as much a hobby as a DD. Yes...I have used them all as DD. I just don't have to drive much. The 996TT is in my price range and I like the AWD factor.

Will driving a 996 attract a lot of people messing with me in traffic? I do like to be a little lower key, but still have something unique. Will the 996 in the long run prove to be a solid car?

If you are not into neon liights,reflective tints,stickers on the side of the car and a porsche sign on the rear window than you don't have to worry about getting an extra attention

They are great cars and have pretty solid reliability.

Do you consider yourself cool?

Yes = get one.
No = it'll make you cool.

P.s. I'm looking to become cool by the end of the week

The car is low key enough, and I have gotten nothing but respect and thumbs up on the road, mostly from true car enthusiast that know what these cars are.

I firmly believe that well taken care of examples will hold value moving forward and will be eventually talked as "first water cooled" 911 Turbos.

Good luck, 996TTs are a lot of car for the money.

Personally, I think you'll miss the E63. We have an E55 wagon and the 996TT. If I could only have one, it wouldn't be the 996TT.

A Porsche certainly won't draw any more attention than some of the cars you've already had -- especially compared with the vettes. I seriously considered a vette before I got the 996TT, and I wouldn't rule out the possibility for me in the future. But for now, the 996TT has the perfect balance of being understatedly fast and classy for me.

FWIW, I completely disagree with the statement on the Vettes. I don't think anybody gives Vettes (even brand new ones) a second look. I don't, and I even know how nasty they are under the hood.

For me, it's not necessarily the amount of attention that you get in a vette -- it's more of the kind of attention you get. In my very limited experience (generally in friend's cars or rentals), you get more attention from people who think you just want to drag race them down the road. I certainly don't get that as much in the 996TT.

Note that I'm not making a value judgement here -- only you can decide for yourself what kind of attention you're seeking....

I had an E55 before the 996tt and I can say the E55 is definitely much better as a DD. More luxurious, better interior, good power. BUT the 996tt definitely turns more heads and chalenging to drive (6sp). My wife loved to ride in the AMG, but will avoid the porsche now at all costs. Might be because of the mods...
