New AZ owner saying hi

Just picked up an '01 996TT last week and so far I'm loving it. I didn't waste any time switching to smoked side markers, getting an ultimatecupholder (who makes a car with seat heaters but no cup holders?), and hooking up my ipod with the iwire cable. Next up I plan to delete the rear window wiper, but I am having a hard time justifying $35+shipping for a half dollar sized piece of plastic from bumperplugs. Just getting the simple things out of the way for now is all.

The car interior was nicely optioned from the factory with full carbon interior, carbon wheel, deviated color seatbelts, porsche crests in seats, etc.. But at some point the carbon fiber went bad and most of it is no longer in the car. Unfortunately this means that someone took out the nice carbon sport wheel and put in the basic 4 spoke. If anyone has a suggestion for economically getting back to the 3 spoke sport wheel let me know. The handbrake is still CF too, but in bad shape, so I am looking for a way to remedy that as well without spending too much money.

A few things I am still wondering about:

I haven't quite figured out how to smoothly pull off 1-2 shifts under hard acceleration. I am not sure if this is because of the traction control kicking in? Or maybe I am not fast enough and the boost drops a bit during shifting? A 997 SSK is definitely on my mod list to try and help with this.

I've also noticed the understeer tendencies, but part of this might be that I haven't learned the finer points of driving a 911. Any tips for driving a rear heavy car?

I've only got one crappy garage photo for now. I'll have to get some better shots soon. Also, I tried to order the plate ILUVTT, but it is under review by some DMV committee for possibly being offensive, lol

Congrats and welcome aboard! With regards to shifting from 1-2, are you getting out of 1st fast enough? I wouldn't stay in 1st too long -- the car pulls really well in 2nd. Maybe you should try shifting a little earlier during your hard acceleration runs?

In terms of under or oversteering, I've found that it's all in the balance of the car while you're in the turns. If you're hard on the gas and have the weight on the rears, you'll get much more understeer. However, a little lift off the gas or tap on the brakes and you'll be able to correct that quickly (maybe even more quickly than you want ).

Have fun!

Congrats! A black TT in Arizona - keep that AC in tip-top shape!! I had to smirk about the cup holder...Mercedes was the same way for decades. The Germans must feel that driving should be done with both hands, without any distractions like an open beverage container.

Enjoy the car....I hope to follow in your footsteps soon.

I know the guy you bought it from, the dentist in goodyear. I took at look at it myself and gave him some advice on selling it. I imagine you got it for a great price.

You're Somy's bud, correct? Will you bit at FIR this weekend? Hope to see you there.

-Darren

Hey Darren, nice to meet ya. I am Somy's friend. I might cruise over to FIR later in the morning to spectate. I wanted to run my s2k, but the ac compressor grenaded just a few days after I got the Porsche.

btw, I don't have enough posts yet to respond to your PM

I got a few buds that are big into the s2k scene and hang around the boards. AZ has a pretty good group, you may be familiar with some of them, Godfather, xeux, etc.

Well, you have my phone number, give me a call or shoot me a text. I may head over to help out Somy later with his door handle on the m3.
