Yeah, I know what you mean, but the fronts were changed not too long ago

I'm thinking about doing the rears this time, and then most likely front & rear next time round

Oooo...actually its recommended you should never run mixed brands at the same time. Also, I think the 0.4 difference is near the max ratios (although don't quote me on that. I tried to quickly find the range, and failed. If I come across it, I'll let you know what the max/range is).

Did you check the grip level (UTQG) between the two (MPS & Conti)? I would just run another set of Contis on rears for now and when those are gone you'll be ready for a new set fronts. At that time, your options will be wide open.

Are you just using the car for daily driving or....???? Winter is coming in your area, so performance/grip isn't really going to be an issue for 5 or six months.

The Contis in OEM TT spec have a 3 rev mismatch

The Pilot Sport OEM GT2 spec have a 2 rev mismatch

If I use Conti fronts and Pilot Sport rears I'll have a 7 rev mismatch
Is that too much?

Daily driver - 10 miles per day
Grip isn't important in the slightest

Due to my limited mileage the tyres will last me ages anyway - but I don't want to spend money I don't have to (by swapping the fronts just yet, or by paying more for the rears than I need to)

Just as an input, I bought my car with Continentals on, the rears had very little thread on the inside so they only lasted about 1000mi, but I didn't like the feel of them at all.

I have Yokomaha ADVAN AD08's now (stock tire sizes, although they are rated up to 168mph), the turn in is incredible compared to the Continentals (maybe because they were old already), and they are more comfortable and quieter.

Running 18's you have a much larger choice of tires and sizes to choose from. 19's & 20's are limited and sticking to stock sizes seems to be the safest bet. I know if I went with 18's I could run a 245 up front & 315 or 325's in the rear...with 19's it just doesn't work out. I do have a set of R6's (315/30) mounted up to 12x19 GT2 rims which syncs up with their 235/35 fronts. Next size down I believe is a 295 but it has to really be stretched out to fit on a 12 inch rim and then I think the next size up is like 345...wont happen...

As long as your diameters are within "factory spec's", you should be fine. Its definitely something to be aware of with AWD vehicles.
VID- Just so you know...this SPECIFIC issue has been discussed to death here in the 996TT forum...including detailed analyses of the 996TT requirements and the 997TT requirements. WAY before they started the 997TT **forum**.

The issue is that there is NO "factory spec"...there are factory spec'd tires, bit no tolerance on tire sizes.

Many, many threads here on this topic. Many.

The OP is looking for an economical solution for REAR TIRES ONLY....all I am suggesting it that he buy the correct tire for his need/application and the correct size.

As you stated: "Many, many threads here on this topic. Many."

Which I to have read, thus I was giving him a heads up so he can make a proper decision on his own.

Again as you stated: "The issue is that there is NO "factory spec"...there are factory spec'd tires, bit no tolerance on tire sizes."

In one of my posting prior to yours I wrote: "I think the 0.4 difference is near the max ratios (although don't quote me on that. I tried to quickly find the range, and failed. If I come across it, I'll let you know what the max/range is)."

Again, All I am suggesting is buyer beware.

Also note the only person the OP has responded to.

Do as you may, write what you want. If this were your vehicle what would you run (rears only & sticking with the Contis up front)?

You said 'as long as your diameters are WITHIN the 'factory spec'. There is no factory spec, AND your '0.4' is outside the range of the factory fitment by 0.3" (so your recommendation is 4 times the factory)

To the OP, (and to answer your question) I'd say the "7 rev mismatch" should be fine. The fact that the contis run big helps.

What I *actually* did was toss out a pair of 225/40s with 50% tread and went to 235/40&315/30...and THEN put the 235/40s on the shelf when I bought 9" rims and mounted 265/35s.

My point of being crabby is there are 1000 posts about 'what tire size for my 996TT' and all this has been hashed out by many, many posters. The few comments he will get with this new thread cannot hope to capture the context and evolution of thinking about matching tire size that has already been posted.
