Body shop painting question

When I have a new (aftermarket) part painted to match the color of my car, would a body shop typically use the manufacturer's paint code for the car, or do some sort of computer color matching? My car is a 2003 factory seal grey color. Just wondering.

There are usually, 2-6 shades of the same color (same color code), you'll want to bring a painted metal body part like gas cap for them to match.

Color Match

The shop (should) start out with the Porsche color code and check for variances in their Paint Manufacturer color deck. Porsche does not sell color packs or paint, so Porsche approved paint manufacturers would be best. Then you should ask them to prepare a spray panel to check the actual color match, before painting your bumper. Color match is not only based on computer mix formulation, but environment humidity and temperature during base coat application, The paint will appear different with varying metallic density and flop (dark /light shading varies from different view angles). Spray gun angle, pressure and fan width will also change color appearance (to name a few). In addition to those factors, the material of your aftermarket bumper will also make a difference in required refinish process.

That all being said, it can be done and done well. Do not shop by price, but look for expertise in your area.

Hi,And do yourself a favor...Go to a shop that paints top end cars....Silvers and greys are tricky colors,so the shop might have to do some tinting and trial and error on their spare sheet metal for a perfect match .Not just out of a can job....Only the best for our babys....lol....

PPG colors are mixed by the painter. They will apply using different angles and apply coats to adjust the saturation. It's kind of an art. Chances are, you'll get 95% match on seal gray. To get 100%, blending is often required on certain colors.

Give them the gas door to match with paint code. Especially with seal gray. It has green tones and purple.

The stock paint is water based glasurit. Make sure the paint shop you use also uses it. It makes all the difference with the quality.
