It would probably be best to replace the whole nav or just use another one like I do (I move it from car to car on trips).

Here is a DIY for the ECU removal and that should get you pretty close to the strut tops. Depending on if you have the subwoofer you may be able to skip a few steps. After you remove the carpet piece, there will be smaller carpet chunks over the struts. They just come right up.

You're screwed on the Nav... I went way out of my way to ensure I got a 996 TT with Nav. Once I did, I went to the dealer to get an updated disk. Apparently, Porsche had a problem with the manufacturer in 01 and severed their ties with them - completely. You cannot get any updated disks for that system. I replaced mine with the Pioneer Z120BT and could not be happier with the features and the look.
