Looking to buy a 996T in Houston- HELP!
I'm not sure why nobody with a 6 speed can admit that your $2000 clutches (every how often!!) and $2000 installation is not a factor. Plenty of tips running with more power and no upgrades. Obviously not handling 6, 700hp well but neither are the 6spds. 2 clutches and the tip wins!!
My comment was more in relation to Tips. I'm not sure of a single tip that has been modified to some extent that hasn't needed to be "built". From what i've discussed with Ajay I don't think he plans on having a stock Porsche for very long.
Maybe it's just the Houston guys that have had the bad luck with Tips.

Look again Ben! I agree it is a Houston thing.

For a Tip to get 600whp, the car will probably have about 800 crank hp... that will probably need an engine built. I'm not good with math but can easily see that it is a money pit.
I think the Tip actually has an edge over 6speed for those that only want to do 700bwp or less. You almost must need to upgrade your clutch but not necessary a Tip rebuilt.
I believe the guy from London?? has a Tip that exceeds 600whp.

It comes with the territory on both sides. If you upgrade your clutch on a 6speed and you know how to drive/take care of it, it will most likely be the only upgrade you need. Rebuilds are cheap once you buy a decent clutch. The bottom line is that noone has built a TIP that can handle more than 600whp for any extended period of time. There are plenty of 6speeds running around that have had an upgraded clutch installed with their power upgrades and have 20k+ trouble free miles.
I wouldn't buy anything from the dealership you mentioned. Do a little searching and you will find out why. Check their BBB score.
I would buy Ben's car if you are looking for a good 996tt in Houston.
Ask that dealer for a DME report and you will soon find out why you do not want to buy from them.

Ajay look at Ben's (bmoores) car. It is done RIGHT and runs VERY well, and he's a stand up guy. Steve at Drivers Source will make sure any car that rolls into his shop gets looked at and make sure it's doing ok in all the right ways. Steve, Arron, and Mark at DS are the only group of guys in Houston (besides my brother (Matt), Zac, and I) to touch Matt's 997TT and my car.
I was actually sitting here talking to Zohair when you were on the phone with him. I'm the guy with the black 996TT at the shop. If you have any questions just hit up Zohair and he will get a hold of me. I'm in town till Friday, and will be back up frequently.

I've been on this board long enough and know that you're not taking a shot at Tips... it is just a matter of opinions and from different perspective. Everything is cool; I was just expressing my view.
It's been proven quite extensively now that these cars don't need engine builds for 600whp. Hell there are probably 20 or more cars now running 700whp+ without engine builds. The tuning has come a long long way on these cars in the last 5+ years. I wasn't taking a shot at TIPS so noone needs to get too sensitive. I just haven't experienced one that has been as bulletproof as a 6speed. That includes Bad107, BHT, and NinjaBoy all who have gone with higher hp projects .......
Yeh no hard feelings for sure. Just pointing the cost on both sides is a must at some point. And while the tip rebuild is more expensive than a real good clutch and install the prices are comparable depending on what you get done. Of course we don't know longevity of the tip rebuild yet but
I expect it will do better than 20k miles.

I have a Carbonetics Triple carbon...thing it was $2.4 K or so, installation was 1.2k and it has been bullet proof.
