This question is not about launching but just starting normal from a stop. The alpha 28 turbos on the 996TT appear to allow boost come on more quickly by starting in 2nd gear rather than 1st gear because of the extra time needed to shift from 1st to 2nd. Why not just start off in 2nd and get into more boost sooner? I have had a lot of cars try to challenge from a stop at a light, (mustangs and even hondas). For an occaisonal cheap thrill, I just stay alongside them to pretend that they are giving me a challenge, then take off like they are standing still for a little fun. This is all within the speed limit and technically not racing, just trying to enjoy a spirited drive once in a while. What gear does one start in to drag race for the best times? -just curious because that may also help answer the question. Thanks!

 

IIRC all the best 1/4 mi times are launched from 1st. Even a tip which wants to launch from 2nd will do better starting from first.

 

you'll wear off the clutch starting from 2nd.

 

Thanks. Good points. I wouldn't want to wear out the clutch so wont do that. I would think that 1st gear would also be better as a start from a slow roll.

Get launch control added to your flash. Problem solved. You'll get .3 bar sitting still.
