Rear spoiler failure -- Add me to the list
I don't know why I didn't think it would happen to me. Probably because this car is used very little. It is a pampered garage queen that has been driven <500 miles per year the last few years.
I was going to take some pictures of it and I like the looks with the spoiler up. I hit the interior switch to run it up and it goes up uneven. Looked under the ram cap and there is a leak.
I am not even going to entertain trying to repair this set up so it can fail again. I will remove it and thow it in the pile next to the original slave cylinder.
The fixed wing thing from ebay is already on order.

love this wing! my hands are dirty as I type from working on it in the garage. I just loaded the reservoirs with some Lucas Power Steering Stop Leak but I don't have that narrow wrench that is required to tighten up the lines at the bottom of the rams. I'll get back to it tomorrow and test it out.
Repaired - permanently
After disassembling the ram I discovered I probably could have repaired the old hydraulic system. The cylinder was stuck in the bore. I'm sure with a clean up and bleed it would have worked fine.
Don't care I really like the looks of the spoiler up and now its up for good. If I ever want to go back I know I can.

Mine failed for the second time with only 17K original miles so I removed the hydraulics and machined a kit to keep it fully extended. I got tired of the "up" look so I just took the upper wing and rams off the car. I like it better that way.
nice garage man.. wish we were neighbors.
so, as i await the delivery of the kit that will make this question moot.. i wonder:
at what speed does the downforce provided by the wing in the up position become something that is better to have, than not. i ask, only because anything that keeps me closer to the ground in this car, particularly at triple digit speeds, "feels" like a good thing. this car often reminds me of the old beach boys lyric "if she had a set of wings, man i know she could fly".
as much as we appreciate them, the spoilers extending can't be just a cool gimmick, can they? so we might not need em at 75mph, but when do they factor in stability wise??

There are threads on here describing high speed runs, 200+ MPH and one guy takes his upper wing off for that. I'm of the impression that with a heavy rear weight biased car, there is already plenty of down force back there. More down force needs to be on the front to keep it planted and less floaty at speed, which is a problem I've had with with earlier 911s. 911 Turbos have always had big spoilers, I think it's tradition rather than necessity.
Ok with the Ebay fixed wing kit http://www.ebay.com/itm/Porsche-996-...3ace7c&vxp=mtr you have to remove the Oil but not the Spring I guess; Im still interested how to safely remove the Spring please ?
The fixed wing "kit" doesn't require removal of the springs. It's also comes with detailed instructions.
I have the kit but managed to fix my spoiler by rebleeding it. I'm so happy about it I'm repeating the news of its repair ad nauseum. Just wrapped it in 3M matte black vinyl to celebrate.

Correct. The rams themselves remain intact. The hydraulics are disconnected and the oil is drained. The "sleeve" where the rams fit are cleaned out and the sensors disconnected. Otherwise, nothing else has to be changed. I did remove the hydraulic pump and motor as it's pretty easy to do.
So I've had some fluid seeping out for some time now on both rams(?)... I imagine it is only a matter of time now before my wing bites it. Is anyone here fixing their wing operation back to stock? I kind of like the automatic up and down function... This kit that a few of you are talking about is a permanent 'up' solution, yes?
I think I read that someone was able to get theirs working again by just bleeding the system? That sounds like a cost conscious way to go about it... eh?
thanks!

s how it should have been all along .
