True to a degree. You can still have accelerated but even wear. If your toe settings are excessive on the positive side you will get accelerated wear with minimal impact on driveability. How the car is driven will also have a big impact on how even the treadwear is. The stock alignment is relatively aggressive for a street car (primarily the rear camber). With theses settings one needs to do a lot of high speed cornering to get even wear across the face of the tire. A lot of straight line cruising will wear the inside edges faster. This is what most owners see.

Cheers

In fact, I'm aware that you're often asked by a good alignment shop -- are you looking for longer tire life (e.g. even wear) or better performance?
Agreed. I have a more aggressive alignment on my GT3 for track performance. I get even wear while on the track, but i get even more accelerated wear on the inside of the tires while on the street.

I recently went thru the same dilemma. My Pirellis looked brand new (still had nubs on the sidewalls), but were date coded 2003. I figure the cost of tires is about the same as my deductible and less than the diminished value hit should one blow out and cause an accident. Just a thought....................

Michelin Pilot Sport PS2 is an awesome tire and you won't go wrong with them. They are fairly expensive - $1536 for a set from Tire Rack. Tire Rack can give you a number of different tire options in the proper sizes. A lot of people are running the Hankook Ventus ($814/set) with good results. Car and Driver did a tire comparison a few years back and it came in second. I don't have any experience with this tire myself. Link below:

Thanks..

I have decided on the Michelin Sport PS2 based off of endless reviews and the advice here. My local guy will get, install, guarantee no rim damage, and high speed mount and balance for 2k out the door. He can have them here tomorrow.

My next question.. can I go wider or larger on the rears? Currently it has 295 30's x 18

Then.. my local guy has a new updated alignment machine. Says he can align the car for me as well... he is not a specialist just a hard core tire shop been here for 35 years and says he does all the sports cars in neighborhood. Can he screw it up, or is it like any other hi perf sports car (BMW, Audi, Mercedes) alignment.. A guy came in with an Audi V10 and swore by this guy..

The more I drive this car I wonder why I ever had anything else. Oh, maybe the price..

315/30-18 is the next larger size of PS2 that will fit on your rim. However, I don't know if you won't then run into issues with fitting under the fender. I run this size on my GT3, but I have rolled fenders for extra clearance. I don't believe the Turbo does. Anyone else know for sure? Also you need to keep the front-to-rear rolling diameter ratio close to stock to keep the ABS/PSM computers happy (and on the Turbo the center viscous coupling). I am not sure if the 0.5" diameter increase going to the 315/30 would be a problem or not without also changing the front. Why do you want to go bigger? I would argue that you won't see a significant difference on the street unless you are running more boost than stock. If you are getting a lot of slippage now I would say it is your old tires. They get hard and lose grip with age.

There is no reason that shop couldn't do a good job if they are competent as you say. The camber and toe adjustments are not significantly different than any other performance car. I am assuming your suspension is stock and you are not wanting corner balancing (requires coilovers) or anything extreme.

Cheers

Your 295/30-18 should be matched to a 225/40-18

You could have gone to 315/30 and 235/40.

But you should keep them matched- so no 315 with a 225

$2000 out the door? 1500 for the tires, 200 to mount and hunter road force balance...100 for tax. There is a benefit to having a local guy.... I usually don't squeeze them to tirerack prices, but keep them honest.
