I'd say that there is contributory negligence on their part.

They should have known that this would have been hard to do.

Call them and see how they'll help.

 

It's always easy to look back and say WTF were you thinking... I suspect the TOW company may work with you. I doubt they are going to just write you a check, but may split the cost of repair.. I would not mention to the insurance company if possible. You will pay for it for the next 3 years.

On another note, I like your style!! Next time at least set up a camera!!

 

i guess the tough part is that technically you took voluntary control of the vehicle and were in control of it when the damage occured

Thats is perfectly ok... Besides look at all you learned, guys pay good money to learn stuff like that. Next time you will have a much better idea of the escape velocity required to break the gravity pull of the tow trucks flat bed.

You should have seen one of my failed attempts riding my ultra rare street bike up the ramp into the back of my compensating for something jacked up diesel pick-up. The springs of the exhaust pipes grabbed the edge of the tailgate and would not come free. I was only able to reach the tailgate with about 1/2 and inch of each foot. I balanced precariously all while screaming at the top of my lungs for help. A parking lot full of your friends is not always the most sympathetic group.

 

I still just don't understand why the guy didn't thread the tow hook in and , snap, up with the cable it goes
