Window auto-drop won't stay down?

Hey guys.

I just starting to have this problem today.

My window auto-drop down 1/2 inch function is not working properly, on both driver and passenger door.
Whenever I open the door from outside or inside, the auto-drop function will work as long as I keep the latch pulling.
As soon as I release the door handle or the interior latch, the window will roll back up itself. It drives me crazy since I can't close my door properly unless I slightly pull the door handle or interior latch again after I close my door. It just happen today and it happens to both side.

I've read a thread that was in 2005 said that replacing the battery with a new one could somehow fix this problem, is it possible?

Have you guys encounter this problem before?

I did some research and couldn't find similar issue. Most people only having problem with the switch and window not working at all, but not like this.

I even disconnect the battery and reset the ECU a few times just to make sure it is not a memory problem.

Hope you guys can give me some idea.

Thanks!

I had this problem in my 996 TT after changing batteries last year. Went back to the independent service place that replaced the battery. They had forgotten to do a "reset" which is needed after battery replaced/removed. Took them about 10 seconds. Unfortunately I wasn't watching closely so not sure what the reset is though.

I had this issue as well. Passenger side only in my case. Replaced the door latch assembly in the door fixed it. Cheap fix and pretty easy.

yeah it is in the door lock mechanism in fact, not the door handle. It is only a small switch that fails but you can't buy it seperatly from Porsche, you need to buy the whole mechanism. Someone somewhere found a replacement switch in an electronic supplier, you have to take apart the switch to just get the pin from the new one and insert it in the old one.

If that sounds too complicated to you, you better buy the whole unit instead... The thread is somewhere on the "other Porsche forum" i beleive.

by the way, the reset thing would not give the same problem, the window would not drop at all when pulling the handle. To reset, just lower the window completly and hold it there for 5 seconds, then up completly for 5 seconds and you are set. It can happen when disconnecting the battery.

Had this symptom with my 02 Boxster with its driver's side door/window.

The problem was the door latch was not working.

When the door handle is pulled up but the door is not pulled open the window should drop and remain dropped. If the door is left closed and the handle released the window should raise because the door latch recognizes the door is (has remained) closed.

If the door is opened the window should stay down because the door latch recognizes the door is open.

If the door is opened and the window goes up the door latch is highly suspect.

However, that you have the symptom on both sides... I would be surprised to learn than both door latches have decided to fail at the same time.

This suggests a common failure.

Thus I would consider the battery as others have suggested or possibly water in the cabin.

Blocked water drains is the most common source of water.

Check the carpets, under the seats and check that the carpeted area under each door is dry.

Water can get inside the door and cause all sorts of electrical gremlins.

Oh, the tech replaced the driver's side door latch assembly in the Boxster. I do not recall the parts/labor cost but it wasn't a big repair bill. (Not nearly as expensive as the passenger side door lock assembly cost.. Ouch!).

Sincerely,

Macster.
