My experience with tiptronic seemed like it was always hunting for the right gear in aggressive driving. Some pausing here and there. My tiptronic experience though is really scewed because of owning the Cayenne. I thought the tiptronic absolutely sucked in the Cayenne S. Maybe just the way it was programmed. I only test drove TT with tiptronic and did not spend as much time with them in the TT platform. Maybe there are better in the TT than Cayenne, but too much searching and pausing, especially downshift or kick down. The SMG, F1 and others seem to have better down shift due to double clutch I guess.

Yes, the Cayene Tip and 996 tip are not comparable because of the bugs.

So from a ROLL a 996 turbo tip will be slower than a 996 turbo manual?

But PLEASE, do not say Automatics are better than Manuals for the track. It is not.. it is a glorified automatic that lets you shift, power is robbed, and control is lost.
Sorry, but there are lots of us here with lots of track experience who have been driving manual transmissions longer than many people posting here have been alive, and we think that, in a TT, the tip is faster on the track than a manual. I don't mean that is necessarily shifts faster, although it may. I mean the car goes around the track faster. I certainly believe it, I think Sharky believes it, Hurley Haywood believes it.....

It does rob a little power, and I am surprised you didn't mention it's biggest drawback, it's weight, but with 536 ft. lbs. of torque it doesn't seem to matter much. And you are just wrong about control. Not having to worry about when to up-shift, being able to down-shift with both hands on the wheel, and generally having one less thing to concentrate on allows that concentration to go to the line, the brake point, etc.

And I have always wondered about guys who wax poetic about the etherial quality that supposedly goes along with a manual. I am not sure how comfortable I am riding in the seat next to someone who gets off on reaching over to manipulate a throbbing shaft.

you were doing fine defending your opinion of Tiptronics, but you blew it (no pun intended). The last thing you wanna use is homosexual innuendos defending AUTOMATIC transmissions over manuals. Guess which has to fight the gay stigma from day one?

And the poetic/subjective comments I read from owners who say they prefer Porsche over the Z06 coz of the feedback and soul.. yet some get an automatic?

TIP is faster if u do 0-30-0 is rapid succession 5 times in a row.
hahahaha exactly.

I'm not die-hard for traditional manual.. I had an SMG M3 for about 3 years, THAT was a blast... you can take ur attention of clutching with the flick of the steering wheel paddles, as claimed by the Tiptronic Racers.

With all due respect to them, it is an automatic no matter how many gadgets you put around it. I am only arguing facts here... the arguments I've heard so far from Tiptronic-lovers are opinions of how it feels fast.. or how they drive faster coz the computer is shifting (hell you gonna buy the first car that drives itself) ?

The subject is touchy esp. to TIP owners, so I'm sure I'm not making any friends by speaking my mind...

It's pretty sad that 50% of Turbo owners really believe a Tiptronic transmission shifts faster than manual...

With a tip you can powerbrake and build boost prior to launching, and you don't loose boost on the 1-2 shift. You also get a 2-2.5:1 torque multiplication from the torque converter from a dead stop. At higher RPM the torque converter clutches lock eliminating slippage.

It is fact that 50% of Turbo owners can shift faster and more reliably with a Tip than with a manual.

The car doesn't drive. The driver does and there's your weakest link.
