944T Turbos are relatively cheap and can be made in to great PCA gt3rs (class) cars for under 25k including vehicle you could have a really fast 944t that dare I say would embarass the 996 tt you own especially on the track.. A approx 350 hp could be had for 4k plus installation. then figure in race suspension 6-7k and a cage 500-1k, belts 500, seat/s 500-1k
GO FOR IT!!!!
REMEMBER RACING AIN'T CHEAP

I second 944, or if money allows, a 944T. I owned a 1983 944 and a 1987 911 and tracked both. Believe it or not, the 944 was so well balanced that track times on both cars were comparable. I now track my 996tt but am considering a 944T dedicated for the track in the future. You must know, however, that whatever you get will never be fast enough or handle well enough. You will always be adding, changing and upgrading.
PS. I sold the 944 with 178,000 miles and still going strong.

Regardless, the best way to get into a track car is to find one that is already built... you will save a lot of money that way.
I second the sloth (although question his qualifications if he's truly slow! )

I'd go Spec and cheap when getting started. Spec RX7 or Spec Miata are both cheap. Spec RX7 is cheapest (maybe 3-5K for a very competitive car). Miata is more like 7-10K for a really competitive car. Parts are cheap, and Mazda sells them at a discount to racers.

I recommend Spec for the simple reason that you want to be able to gauge your progress as a driver. If you are in a class that allows a lot of modification, you will never know if your performance is due to your ability or your car's level of preparation. I spent six months thinking I sucked, before I figured out that my car was prepared horribly. Once we got it sorted, I won the So Pac Division Spec RX7 championship (1998) against 50+ other drivers.

I would also buy a car that is already built. First, it's much, much cheaper that way. Second, if you can arrange to pick the car up immediately after the previous owner's last race, you can verify whether or not it is being sold in competitive trim.

P.S. If you must have a Porsche for your track car, the Spec 944 class is probably the best way to start given the above.
