Short metallic sound on startup?

To take this more off topic, I just got stock 996 GT2. NO FUN compared to my modded to the teeth turbo. The K24s feel like they take eons to spool! These ball bearing turbos are the shiz!
sorry, off topic kinda..i was just talking with a fellow tt owner the oher day talking stock vs modded and we agreed we all think our cars are fast ( stock ) until we mod, once you add that easily available 100hp all bets are off. although, it's all relative. having said that, if i had only ONE thing and one to improve it would at least be suspension by way of lowering springs. VERY cheap, and a significant ( really ) improvement. h&r's are like 350 a set!
my driveway when the noise occurred is very steep and turn in is sharp also. i used to get abs/psm cels until i stopped friggin parking and 3 pt backing out. i don't park on that incline any longer and no more noise. was a ghastly metal on metal noise ( oil STARVED ) sound. if we both had the same sonic experience. either way, not a good or normal sound, to be sure. try and park and store it flat. h&r springs will help ya stay flat too. kidding...

i wish i had your dilemma.. "hmm, which to drive today, the gt2 or my 600hp tt. decisions, decisions" lol..
back on topic to OP. my car made that horrible sound again. sure doesn't seem like a starter, and it's happening only after i've engaged my steep *** driveway. bad sound. my car isn't setup for hill climbs.

Maybe try to get a sound clip on the next startup. I'll have my iPhone ready and try to do the same

two points. noise happens so fast that it'd be hard to capture. the upthread youtube sounded like a starter, my noise does not. it happened again yesterday, and it's near 100 degrees out here AND i have that steep uphill and turn hard left driveway deal. i can't capture the sound on iphone and it only began to do this once this thread went up! so being superstitious, so i'm outa here ha. also completely inept when it comes to uploads of pics or vid. pls post if you capture it.

I have a feeling that you are hearing the same thing as in this thread

If that's it, it's pretty normal. The longer the car sits between drives the higher your chances of it happening. Oil drains down from the lifters and other hardware that requires oil pressure the longer the car sits. Also, the thinner the oil and the hotter it is outside, the quicker it will happen.
i.e. you are running 0W40 in Texas during the summer and you let the car sit for a week without being started.

I'll have to listen to this on some better speakers when I get home but I think we may have a winner here! It would all make sense. This was the first longer drive with the fresh oil (Mobil 1 0w40) and the car was pretty hot when I parked (just drove up the mountain), so the oil probably drained really fast. I started it up a few hours later and that's when it made the sound. My pressure goes up to just below 5 on cold startup, so there should be no issue there.

i also think this is the cause of my recently developed noise. true, 0-40 gets awful thin at these temps i would imagine.

This is probably spot on. There is no damage happening while the lifters fill up. Just a normal start-up for these cars.
along with this quote from that other thread from pwdrhound: I'm willing to bet that your car did not have this "problem" for the most part when it was cold(er) outside. I believe this problem manifests itself more when the outside temps are fairly warm because when it's hot the oil stays thinner longer after shutdown and drains more easily off of your valves, lifters, etc. Also, your ims chain tensioner will leak down a little quicker when the oil is thinner and the sound you hear for a brief second or two is a combination of the lack of oil on your valves and lifters but for the most part it is the rattle you hear as a result of the slack in the timing chain. As soon as oil pressure builds in that 1 or 2 seconds, voila, slack in the chain is gone and the noise is gone. In the winter, or with colder outside temps, after you shut down your engine the oil will become thicker faster and will be less likely do drain off of the engine internals and will also prevent your chain tensioner from leaking down as fast. GT3 guys have this also....

I took the exact same drive today. Parked in the same spot for the same amount of time and even the temp was the same LOL
No noise on startup this time. The only thing different from last week is that I added about 1/5 quart of oil. Doubt that would make a difference though. Maybe the engine just needed a good run with fresh oil after sitting for a while .
I did hear the 1 sec lifter noise when starting in the garage this morning but that was very minor and over really quick.

Guess it's the nature of these engines. When I test drove a 2010 Carrera S, it wasn't exactly smooth at startup either and the car only had about 8k mi on it.
