Powder coated wheels

Got mine done - $80 wheel. The powder coat is actually off a shade or two but looks pretty good.

It's stood up to road gravel pretty good.

The only part of the VW that's not dented or broken is showing. It goes in the shop next week for repair when the Mercedes comes out.

You guys need to really think about the desirability of powder coating wheels. As I hear it, powder coating (twice) is the source of the problem with the Kinesis wheel that broke and there was a thread about a few days ago. Apparently the heat of powder coating anneals the metal and weakens it.

At least that is what I have been told.

EDIT - I now see the thread that I mentioned with many great posts about this situation.

Cheers,

I was watching "American Choppers" tonight and they're building a drag bike for NAPA. They painted the frame because powder coating would weaken the structure.

I have a couple of sets of OEM wheels with track tires. I will definitely not track these wheels. But they look good and since my last HUGE speeding ticket I try and stay subsonic so these should suffice for every day use.

Becareful the powder coat material doesnt get on the rotor side of the wheel, a friend with a E30 M3 just had this wheels powder coated, it started to melt, the wheel then came loose, during a drivers school, track event...

Car looks sweet Ken.

Tried to have the wheels on my M3 powder coated years ago and they refused. I guess their primary concern is on cast wheels but there policy is just not to do any wheels at all.

I planned to have my m3 chassis powder coated, I am thinking I should consult more after read that.

There is also two other forms similar to powder coating. Cathode and Anode dipping. Porsche chassis are sent through a cathode bath I believe before being painted. I wonder if that process would compromise the structural integrity.

Curious if the number 12 is symbolic of your shoe size or perhaps... K, I am done what it already........

Heat associated with powder coating was an issue on the NAPA drag bike because it had a chromoly frame.
