Its time for a a new toy !!
First of all let me say hey to everyone. I have been reading your post for months now and everyone seems great with lots of GREAT knowledge . So its about time for a new toy . I narrowed down. 03 911 x50 Or the new v10 ///M5 . I know there two diffrent cars but if the M5 is just *** fast why not , did you see all the gizmos. come on guys let me know whats up.
I had an M5 (E39) for 3 years. Loved it. Now that I own a 911, I can't believe how "Heavy" the M5 was. Heavy through turns; through acceleration. It was not "nimble" as I feel the 911 is. I wish I had changed sooner....
I traded my 98' C4S for my E39 M5... this was a totally wrong decison I've made, since the M5 is always sitting in my garage. Go for the X50 TT

Thats a hard decission to make. I'm trying to find the link to an article that I believe Automobile magazine put out saying how the e60 m5 is better than/equal to the Ferrari F430.
I'm thinking you inherently prefer 4 doors to 2 otherwise you would be comparing the 996TT to the M6 and not the M5. The previous M5 was a big fast car. The 996TT is more "quick" - agile, light. Having said that the 996TT is a boat compared to real agile cars like the Elise and GT3 but it seems from your choices you're not looking for a quick "track" type car. You're looking for a fast GT.
Personally I would go M5 because it's newer, the 996 has been out for a while and will be replaced soon. I don't keep cars long so I usually prefer the newer car because I get to experience more variety that way. You can always get an M5 and then the 997TT in a couple years.

M5 is not a toy, it's a compromise. In the end it's just a (very) fast utile sedan.
porsche, ferrari, lambos, radicals, tvrs, vipers, vettes, etc. --- those are toys.
only sedans that can be considred toys would be the Phantom or Arnage or even Sti or Evo ... not the client carrying M5s imo.

If it's your only car and you may need space to haul stuff or people, get the M5.
If you are considering a tip 996TT, I'd get the M5 just for the SMG option. If manual, delete this consideration.
If you live in AK and plan on driving eithre car in winter, get snow tires and you'll be OK in both. Shame on you for not getting a winter beater if this is the case.
If none of above apply, you are better off with a 996TT. Reliable, fast, classic styling and a real sports car that is practical. Can't think of anything else comparable. Can you?
