New Porsche owner needs advice on a new clutch and flywheel for 996 Turbo
SubscribeI bought my first Porsche 9 months ago a 2003 911 Turbo from Porsche of Tyson in VA. My 911 had only 32k miles in 9 months I have only put an additional 4k on it. I pulled the car fax report and had a mechanic look at it but it was a great deal. In 3 months I need a new pedal pressure plate Tyson charged 3k, now I felt the clutch starting to go (I was told by the salesman and manager a new clutch was installed in 2011). That said I took it back because to Tyson (I know deals are more expensive) but I thought the pressure plate replaced last year was the clutch my mistake.
So I left it with Tysons, they confirmed it needed a new clutch the cost is 4900. I was shocked. I checked around and could probably get it done for 3600. Well I left it with Tyson I got the call today that the Flywheel was aftermarket smaller and lighter and that the new clutch would burn it out fast. Now they want a total of 7300 for a Flywheel and clutch. The engine was already out so to have them put it back in and take it to another mechanics would cost about the same.
I have found out that my car has a high end chip and a lowered suspension I suspect the pervious owner tracked it. Which might account for the smaller light flywheel.
Now for my questions
Is 7300k outrageous as I think it is?
Why would the pervious owner have installed an after market smaller lighter flywheel?
I need to get up to speed quickly so that this is my last OMG moment
I love the car with the chip 0-60 in about 3 sec. I'm just shell shocked that in 9 months 4k miles I have put 10k into the car that doesn't count the 4k I paid to have 19" turbo 2 rims and wheels with spacers and the 1k Pioneer 8400.
All advice is welcome, James

It's like this, you buy a modded car, you better know who did the modding, what was used in terms of materials and what else got messed up doing so ie what was the impact on other components or systems in the car. It's a genuine risk you take buying a mongrel!. Results are always unexpected out of pocket expenses. ALWAYS!!
Yes, that is too much for a replacement clutch and LWFW. You can get a Tilton for that kind of money. Many vendors on the 6 sell clutches that will handle a flash for under $4k. Buy it yourself and give it to them to install and never go back there again.
dealers make commission on the service.. i just posted the same thing somewhere else today.. sachs clutch will hold just fine.. find a indy shop you trust and never, ever, go to the dealer. they will never take responsibility for their work, they will blame it on you. if you really want to raise a fit, they should have not sold you the car with an aftermarket fly-wheel. FYI. but thats an uphill battle
My complete ERP tripple carbon clutch set up with flywheel and everything else needed was less then 4g; in my opinion that is one of if not the best clutch set ups out there for a porsche. It will take huge HP and it also works great for lesser HP cars; consider it one of the last clutches you might ever need for a sub 800hp car.

Yeah I'd be a bit miffed at the dealer for selling a car that was modified and they didn't tell you. Then one of the modified parts fails and you're getting the short end of the stick. If the car was lowered, chipped and had aftermarket clutch, it was clearly raced in some form (or you can say anyway
) yet they sold you the car with no disclosure or even warning about aftermarket parts? Hmmm.. Sketchy at best.
I'd be having a "quick chat" with them. Step 2, rent mega phone and huge foam suit and show up in the dealership and "talk" to everybody, don't leave until the police are called.

Why was the engine out? there is no ''smaller'' clutch out there unless it is a multi disc. A light weight flywheel should have made itself know by idling in neutral.
"In 3 months I need a new pedal pressure plate Tyson charged 3k"
Who installs a a pressure plate and does not change the disc? Or even better does not notice it is a LWFW at that point!! Sorry to hear about your experience.
Edit: plus 3 on ERP

Hate to see it (or say it), but they saw you coming. You ned to educate yourself so you don't get taken. I'd run from the current Porsche dealer. Find someone you like (and trust) Indy or stealer.
Thank for relies, as I said I thought I had done my homework. Called my best friend who is a Porsche fanatic look up the vin records .... I am stuck with Tyson's right now when it was just the clutch I let them proceed. They ordered the clutch when it arrived they took out the engine and clutch to install the new one, this is when they noticed the After Market flywheel. So I could have them put it all back but they will charge me about 1500 to 2k for labour. Any savings I could gain from an indy shop are negated by the work they already did.
I am fighting them to get this done for 5500 from the 7900 they are currently charging. I checked 4 other Porsche dealers around VA and MD to see if Tyson's was just way-out there on price. The dealer in VA Beach wanted 8k for both clutch and flywheel. So that seems to be the cost from local dealers.
I could have them put it all back pay the 1500 - 2k and see if I can get the ERP tripple carbon clutch set up with flywheel and everything else needed for 4k + the 2k I would pay Tyson's would have a total 6k still better than 8k.

I was told to replace the clutch the engine had to be dropped and de coupled from the transmission. Which they said they have done they removed the old clutch and thats when they saw the aftermarket flywheel. The labour is 1/2 the cost because they had to drop the engine. Serval shops I talked to said the same?
what tim is saying is they say the motor has to come out but it doesnt. they charge you for labor they didnt do. have you actually seen the motor and trans out of the car? from tips tim gave me i all but dropped my trans from under my car in less than 5 hrs. i needed to remove 4 bolts, the slave and shift cables and it would have been out of the car motor still in.
