Took the long way home and suffered for it, broken HRE wheel
It would be about a $2600 bill out of pocket if I just paid for it myself. I don't have an agent as I signed up online, so I'm going to find a local one to talk to if I can.
Look at the bright side of things… You still have your health. That big old metal could have sent you off the road into a tree, a wall, what ever it may be and got you hurt. You could have taken a shrapnel right in the keister like Marcus Gronholm's Co-Pilot Timo;

I thought your insurance does not go up unless it's your fault.

Insurance companies do not always raise rates for a first time incident. My wife had her first accident and rear ended someone at a light. we never saw an increase for it, however 18 mos later we got hit with a state approved increase and went shopping. Much to our surprise, we found Allstate was even less than our previous state farm. Sometimes these things have a way of working themselves out. Good luck
Consider yourself lucky, as there could have been way worse damage or end results. No one got hurt but your wallet

incident...he got paid.
So my adjuster liked my explanation of the events and the pictures I provided for him, so we got the accident considered 0% at fault.
Still had to pay deductable and for the betterment of two rear tires, but overall I'd say this could have gone much worse.

congrats on the minor victory. i sure hope your rates don't take a hit. i got my busted wheel fixed for 100 bucks!, it;s better than the other three now. man, we all take our hits on these things. good to hear youre back on the road.
Thought I'd post up a couple last pics of the wheel off the car before it got recycled the other day. Got less than $13 for it which seems a shame for a wheel that cost over a grand new.

Forget the insurance claim, you'll end up paying for it in the long run with increased premiums. Pay for it out of pocket and file a claim against the city/municipality. There's a good chance that manhole cover fell off a state vehicle. Depending on your state, you might even be able to file in small claims court. Just make sure you look up the rules for suing the state. They usually have some very specific requirements and time constraints. A little bit of time and research could easily get you reimbursed without needing to hire an attorney.
There is a good chance that the front wheel hit it while it was laying down flipping it up off the ground and into the rear. I always seem to get flat tires on the rear where i had to have hit the nail with the front tire which stood it up and in the rear it goes.
