996 Turbo / GT2 Turbo discussion on previous model 2000-2005 Porsche 911 Twin Turbo and 911 GT2.

Is it true one needs to budget 10% of 996's original cost....

is it possible for a newb/non mechanic to learn how to fix and repair, or install parts themselves on an exotic like a Lamborghini, from reading a few books or going on internet car forums? This way, one can theoretically only pay for parts and do all the stuff themselves-- rather, the things that aren't technically complex/complicated.
Nothing is impossible but as others have stated, the information is limited. Someone that can afford a $200k+ car typically won't bother trying to service it themselves; not worth their time. Specialty tools and diagnostic equipment is also expensive. They are also not as easy to work on as a run-of-the mill vehicle. I would personally only work on those cars if I were a seasoned mechanic. Bottom line, if money is a concern, stay away from Italian exotics.

The other thing that is kind of a turn-off for me as well is the attention those cars get. I like that I can pretty much park my TT anywhere without having to worry about it much.

All that said, if someone wants to donate a 458 Italia, I'll take it

Car was serviced annually, oil changed with filter for the first 7 years. Mileage averaged 2600 miles/year during that time. I have all the records and receipts showing this. The oil never got dirty, and I'm OK with this. I'd rather this than the oil sit in the car for years.

i wish i were that diligent... i was trying to imagine what might need svc'g. i always found it a bit strange that most of the book stuff @ 30/60/90k mi is primarily the normal oil/filters eg check this, torque that.. then just wait for stuff to break

but i always felt the service intervals were a bit too liberal in their timeline and i do stuff before it's "due" also, but i cant diy though i'm the worst kind of client since my tech has to listen to me ask stupid s*it over his shoulder since most of the cars work is done here on the ranch.. if could do it all myself i'd be changing the oil about every ... 2600 miles. kills me every time i see that nasty sh*t pour out. it's like,.. did I do that!?!.. cheers.

Which car would be more appealing to thieves or chop shop criminals? I know the top 10 most stolen cars in Canada aren't Lamborghini, Ferrari or Porsche.

And I'm glad winter is nearing its end here... I will be seeing a lot of cars from all 3 brands.

...i'm still playing along..lol and i still think it's reasonable to set aside btw $3.5 min and up to-$5k a year if sh*t really goes south. particularly if you don't wrench it yourself. if ya don't spend it all in one, you can probably make it up +/- next year. i mean c'mon,.. a set of michi ps2's installed/aligned is nearly $2k alone. i use 4 rear tires a year on average, at what? 500+ x 4? using that 10% figure as an *average*, it may not mirror others experience, but it does mine. most of these cars are now worth about 35-50k?. there's your ( or someones nearly ) 10%. it's not insane. i think the guys spending less than a cpl grand a year to run their cars are very very resourceful or it's parked much of the time. at the very least.
